For instance, when I began shopping for the only Honda I've ever owned (my 2004 Honda Pilot, purchased used), I quickly learned to avoid any 2003 model or early 2004 model due to a major transmission lubrication problem. And that problem wasn't exclusive to Pilots, it also included all the 2003 and early 2004 Odysseys.

I've learned that to avoid most transmission issues, get one that uses a clutch pedal. I have 5 cars sitting in my yard right now and all of them have said pedal.

Who makes a manual transmission in a mini-van?

Mazda MPV :)

I don't know that model that well, but Wikipedia says it is automatic only. At least the 2006+ 3rd generation. Do they really offer a manual transmission today?

No, it's the old school one that had a manual. Mid engine too :).

You can get a Mazda5 with a 6-speed mantran.

"Sport" indeed!

My wrx has been rather reliable consindering what she is put through. Oil sometimes disappears, so I fill it, but no leaks really, other than a small oil leak on one bank.
Small oil leak, leading to a smell of oil sometimes... And maybe not the best car around, but considering its now 6 or 7 years old, and 80k miles its doing fine.

I don't remember there ever having been a mid engined Mazda MPV. The original ones were front engine, RWD - I rode around in one as a taxi on my honeymoon this year. :) The only mid engine minivans I remember from Japan were the awful old Toyota boxes, and the similarly awful and ugly Mitsubishi ones. I think the Toyota Previa was mid engined, too.

Someone could probably move to the Cayman Islands and make a pretty good living if they knew how to work on those old ass Japanese minivans. They're everywhere.

And speaking of famously reliable cars being awful...Kara drove my old Mercedes on a trip today, because we don't trust her 2001 Camry to make it the whole way. :D

I'm about half thru changing the timing belt. Cam and crank seals look good. Found a significant PS fluid leak where the low pressure hose connects to the pump. Valve covers are definitely leaking. Still need to check oil pan gasket and oil pump seal.

The valve cover gasket in the wrx leaks a little. You smell oil pretty much all the time, but it isnt bad yet. , but with teh windows up, adn the heat on.. You smell hot oil .As far as anything else, it just goes through ps fluid a little, you do have to keep an eye on that, I have not checked tranny fluid in a while, I need to do that, but I think its ok.On other fronts, the bmw 325is runs again. It is mobile, it runs , it does not misfire or whatever. The sentra (carls old car) runs now, the power steering makes noise, but it runs. Next up is put new axle on the car, I can do it. And we have a two car stable again!

Doesn't look too strange to a former old Lotus owner or a current old Dodge van owner.

any idea of where its coming from? my '05 RS is building a nice oil slick on the undercarriage that looks just like that. i'm trying to work out if its coming from a cam seal or the oil pump without pulling the belt covers off.

It appears most of it has come from the PS pump's 5cent o-ring. The cam seals are definately not leaking. I'm changing the oil pump seal - its hard to tell if it is this seal or the oilpan gasket leaking so I'll do both. While the oil pump housing is out, I'll replace the front crank seal. Then the valve cover gaskets. Then clean and degrease everything and put it back together.

We just got back from holiday travels, so hopefully I'll be wrapping this project up this weekend.

Cash

Well, FINALLY done! Here's the summary of work:

Spark plugs
Plug wires
Front axles
Fronts axle seals
Front brake pads
Valve cover gaskets
Accessory belts & idler
Timing belt, auto-adjuster & idlers
Power steering pump o-ring
Air filter
Engine oil & filter
Tranny fluid
Coolant and conditioner

Cleaned and de-grease engine, exhaust, cross-member, etc. It appears most of the oil was from the PS pump and the valve covers.

Let's hope I'm done working on it for a while. Now I can get the racecar on the lift!
