Well Vincent, it is the ultimate driving machine, you think its easy to make the ultimate driving machine AND making it reliable? A few costly repairs here and there are a small price to pay to experience the ultimate.

I guess you are right. I mean, it's a lot to ask for a car to be expensive and reliable.

i'm sorry VK, (and the octopus ink cloud that feels the need to fall in behind your opinions) but in case you didn't get what Pete just said, let me paraphrase............. Fu** Off, i don't remember any of us anywhere ever insulting any car brand on these here forums. other than, well of course the BMW haters. good for you, segragated succinct opinionated bullshit that no one really asked for. give it a rest or buy a BMW and bitch like an owner rather than a blogger............ BTW bloggers are a thing of the past in case you haven't heard yet.

I love rants like this. This is the best way I've found to tell when PBR is on sale. Thanks Steve!!!

Ummm, no, not really, at least for vehicles 3 years old.

Honda 139, Toyota 122, Lexus, Acura 123, Ford, Buick, Jag, Lincoln, Infinity and Saab all above average.

Avg = 151

Mazda, BMW 164, Chevy, Volvo, Subie, Nissan, Mitsu, VW, Mini, Chrysler and Dodge all below average quality.

Of course, we've all seen the car manufacturers' reliability ratings that indicate Honda is great from the dependability standpoint, no argument there. My point was about major issues, not overall reliability. Honda's certainly had their share when you look at their entire product line over the past 15 years. For instance, when I began shopping for the only Honda I've ever owned (my 2004 Honda Pilot, purchased used), I quickly learned to avoid any 2003 model or early 2004 model due to a major transmission lubrication problem. And that problem wasn't exclusive to Pilots, it also included all the 2003 and early 2004 Odysseys.

I've learned that to avoid most transmission issues, get one that uses a clutch pedal. I have 5 cars sitting in my yard right now and all of them have said pedal.

Obviously Vincent doesn't have a Subaru with a clutch pedal (5spd) ;).

Correct. I wouldn't buy a Subaru, or a BMW, or <insert any German car here>.

Thanks to this thread, I will immediately rid myself of all cars Germanic in origin, thumb my nose at all things Subaru, have a big Honda "H" tatooed on my @ss, and take a vow of chastity...wait, scratch that last part.

I am a renaissance man. I own a Honda and BMWs.

- WAAAAAY back to Cash's original topic, I would consider the issues described a little annoying, but not a 'bad one.' The car may have just reached the "cost to maintain" vs "value I get from driving a ~100K car" threshold the would initiate a sale...but that one is up to you, of course.
- E46 cooling issues - the e46 I just sold to a friend had 161K miles and was still on the stock radiator. The water pump had been replaced, and the thermostat housing had been replaced, but the craptastic plastic end-tank radiator was still leak free. That being said, I strongly advised him to replace it in the near future. That was the best car I've ever owned.

I don't know what manufacturer initiated the plastic end tank design, but they should kick him square in the a$$.

Amen. This is something we can both agree upon with no reservations.

It's not like metal tanks were bastions of reliability either.

I just did the plugs on Laura's Forester. One of the oil seals around the plug holes was leaking; I blame this thread.

Thread resurrection! Back to hating Subies - It is now leaking 2qts of oil in less than 4000miles. I'm getting ready to do valve cover gaskets, oil pan, cam seals, oil pump seal, crank seal, timing belt, etc.

It also has a parasitic drain that kills the battery if left for 4 days. Pull the 30A fuse that serves radio, immobilizer, keyless entry, interior lights and it can sit for two weeks and still start. :banghead:

Have I mentioned I HATE this car? Why won't a deer jump out in front of it? :furious:

You didn't have to resurrect this particularly thread. :)

Subaru's are like Jeeps. They leak oil to keep the car from rusting apart.

Who makes a manual transmission in a mini-van? the Odyssey, Pilot and some other Honda/Acura shared the same transmission issues. Point being, for some types of cars that strategy is clearly not an option.
