OK, after driving my year old star spec Z1’s this past weekend, I’m going to personally hack these off w/ a knife. Car control was nonexistent thanks to tires w/ no grip, and I mean no grip. It was like driving on ice. That said, I need to pull the trigger on a new set of shoes. I like the Z1’s and these are one of the few tires that come in the STX size of 265. What’s the current buzz on the hot autox street tire? Need to order this week.

I think it comes down to three tire choices?

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08

Also, Hankook R-S3 - that's what I chose, based on forums feedback vs. price. That said, the Sanford surface felt like ice to me, too, on Sunday - it took a lot of patience to keep the back end in check, and I'm way down on power. The R-S3's felt much better at Laurinburg last month.

Rodney,
New rubber is always fun (except the $$$) :( , & I'm not posting on tire choices-'cause I don't know, but Sunday was slick for most of us, and, we didn't even use the slicky part of the runway. The runway was so dirty that at the turn around I was eating my own dirt and grit-seriously-on the way back.

The Hankook RS2 I used for schools and stuff had super grip, and actually still do after 2 years. I hear the 3s are even better.

PS-I'll be ordering soon too.

Gwen

I found no solid leads on new/improved tires so I kept with the Z1*s. GRM is supposed to have a tire review article come out in April timeframe, but I haven't seen anything new on Tirerack to make me that concerned. I thought about RS3s, but eventually stayed with Dunlop.

Kind of bummed my tires didn't last a year, but it's still cheaper than Rcomps!

Rodney,

Are you running 18" wheels? I have a set of Star Spec 275/35-18 on the M5 that I'd like to swap out. They have a good amount of tread left (about 6k street miles, one autox) and are two years old. The car is garaged 24/7 and only driven ~3k/yr, hence they are still sticky and feel great. I'm ready to switch to a more "normal" street tire for this car (thinking of the new Michelin Super Sport coming out soon).

If only they were 265's (275 is too wide for STX class).

RS2/RS3s don't have near the sidewall stiffness of the StarSpec and Rodney's mustang has struts in the front so that's something to keep in mind. I think the RE11 has pretty stiff sidewalls too, but they are $$$.

RS3s would probably be better on a double wishbone car (ie STR S2000/NC Miata or ST Civic or STX RX8 etc).

It's not just the suspension design alone, as it is struts coupled with a heavy car. Lightweight strut cars would do fine with RS3s, heavier cars notsomuch.

Yep. Gwen obviously liked her RS2s on the Mini.

I hated mine and they had no grip and they had over 4/32" tread left :(.

Michelin PS2s, had them on the Z06 as a street tire and ran the car at CMP with them. good grip. kinda pricey.

but if you must change tires to chase cones .............. i have no suggestions.

Gwen

There was a lot of grit out there. On my last run, a pebble rattled off my windshield .... thrown from my own front tire, in the giant offsets near the end of the course.
