OK, I need some advice. I just picked up a ’99 Golf straight drive w/ 77k miles for $1200. Couldn’t pass up that deal. Had the 60k service done to replace the timing belt, drive belts, water pump and so on. Has basically new tires and alignment and drives great.

Right now I’m setting this up as a DD, but it has a few issues. One of note is the ignition switch. Right now it’s in 2 pieces and I need a screwdriver to start the car. I have a new switch assembly that I bought from Jeremey at Wagner's, but I need a recommendation for a lock smith to re-key the replacement tumblers. Any suggestions?

If Jeremy has the VIN for the car the new ignition switch came from you should be able to get a new key no problem. I had one cut for my Z-24 via the VIN a few years back.

I had a copy of a copy of a copy key only for my E30, I sent him just the old key and trunk lock. Figured out the key code, cut me a master key and two useable keys. All for like 25-30 bucks. I will go back to him for all of my key needs from now on.

i think what he is trying to do is get the ignition switch keyed to match his door keys. He does have the original key and the receipt has the vin on it.

this.....

trying to get the tumbler setup to match my existing keys. having 2 of these large key fobs, one for the door and one for the ignition would be a pain to work around. I'll call Marshals and go from there.

Thanks!

Would it be possible/simpler to just program the fob for the new ignition key to the car?

This thread may help....

That's a good thought, but the key I got w/ the new assembly is rather beat up. On top of that, I only received 1 key. I have all 3 original keys, so I think I'll stick w/ having everything switched.

Thanks Jeb!
