Ugh. Looks like at least one valve seal is bad.

Light oil smoke at idle, lots of oil smoke with throttle (Happens from cold to warm motor). Nothing coming out of the crank breather/pcv (slight vac on both at idle). Compression is 180 across all 4. Some oil fouling on #1 plug. Oil is clean after a drive to sanford/back + 8 ax runs, doesn't smell burnt or of fuel.

Unless I'm mistaken. It was doing it while we were running yesterday. It was a long day but I thought it was a black Miata smoking when you got on the gas going up the runway.

The smoke at autocross didn't bother me too bad, it's a good bit more after sitting overnight/idleing in the driveway. I need to take it out and do a few WOT onramp pulls to see if it's just residual sitting in the bores from sitting overnight/only idling.

Did you replace the stem seals, or did George do it?

I've had ... let's see ... 9 heads cleaned up at CHS and they have never screwed a single thing up.

Edit: 10. Forgot one.

George did it.

I just went out and tested some more stuff. I'm pretty confident it's not the valve seals now. Smokes way too much when on throttle to be that. Time to pull the head off and hope I didn't do the same thing again. This time in one weekend somehow.

Guess fubar'd HG is the best case now but I'd put that at extremely unlikely. Could be really unlucky and have a stuck oil control ring. That fits the good compression, no blow by scenario.

Anyone got a line on a 2001-2005 Miata motor. :x

Thinking the oil control rings are stuck. Smokes like bandit after it's been running for a minute or two.

I'm going to dump some seafoam into the bores today and let it soak for a few hours then bring it around the block to see if that loosens them up. Since I'm set on replacing the motor I'm currently debating how willing I am to smokescreen Danville. It should keep the mosquitoes away. :)

smokescreen is cool...just leave the oil slick and tire-puncturing tacks at home. Bring the laser-guided missiles though--they're always fun to see.

I think I'm somewhere between "get a meatball flag for smoke" and "spraying oil out the exhaust."

Do the missiles bump me into XP? I need to know if Mazda ever made a rocket.

Screw getting another BP engine.....it's 383 small block time. Hell, Les is about ready to give up on his Vette, so maybe he'll sell you that engine ;).

Just claim that it is cosmetic... kinda like a paint job. I don't think that will work, but it doesn't hurt to try right?

I'm sensing that this engine has been cursed for you for some time. Or is it the car....... :stick:
