Forgive me for a minute if I appear to be ignorant of trailer hubs and bearings. I can't seem to find a shop manual for the trailer!

How much play is acceptable in a trailer hub? Before I tear into it, anyone know how most of these hubs are adjusted? Think it needs a rebuild? Probably has 12k miles on it by now.

Thanks for any advice.

They are just like the front bearings in my old car, I would guess that there shouldn't be any more than 0.005 inches of end play, really shouldn't be anything noticable at all.

There is a pair of bearings in each hub, inner and outer, just simple cone shaped bearings, with a race pressed into the hub.

To seat the bearings, torque to about 15-20 ft-lbs while spinning the wheel, then back off the nut about 1/4 turn. That should leave basically zero end play in the hub, and it will spin freely.

New bearings are cheaper than dirt. New hubs are cheap as dirt...

Northern sells hubs that are pre-packed with grease, ready to bolt on (doesn't get any simpler).

I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

Only peripherally related:

I carry 2 whole spare hubs with me when I travel. I'm sure if my hubs ever go, it's going to be at one am in the rain about 125 miles from SmallestTown, AZ.

Bearing buddies also kick butt!!! Get some! I refill my bearings with grease before every rally I travel too. I don't want seven cents of grease to strand me on some stupid rainy dark highway... in New Jersey! ;)
