ok, another question for you tire gurus.

The guy I'm buying my wheels from said he ran 245/45-16 A6's. I don't have the $ for A6's.

However, the idea of that much tire sounds good to me, but from what I hear, the V710's are stiffer sidewalls (as are the R1's). Any chance that its possible to mount a 245/45-16 V710 on a 6.5" wheel? Is it a dumb idea and should I just run 225/50-16's? If I try it, will Jeb never speak to me again?

You'll never get them on there. Putting 245 V710's on a 8" rim was painful, but can be done. The tire bead kinks up and you can never get the bead to set. On the same rim, I am positive I could get a 305 Hoosier to mount up... quite easily. I've mounted 315's on a 8.5" Corvette rims many times with no issues, but Kumhos are a whole different animal. - AB

I know plenty of subaru folks running 245 v710s on 7" wheels. Jeb didn't seemed in disbelief when I expressed those intentions (before deciding to get the kooks).

These are 6.5" wheels though.

How hard are the Hankooks to mount? Would they be an option?

The $50 rebate on BFG's is making them sound more and more attractive. $172/tire+$50 rebate.

I'm not that worried about getting heat into them, given that we'll have two drivers in the car and little to no camber.

Glen Tire in north Durham can mount your kumho's. There's a trick to doing them, and he's broken the code, lots of heat and a huge volume of air. he mounts my 315 v710's on the front 8.5 rim of the vette. But there's a point where the tire domes up in the center and is perhaps putting down a smaller contact patch, this effect can be lessened with lower air pressure. But the feel good knowledge of the larger tire always makes me do it even if I might not be getting as good a contact if I used wider rims

Being in your shoes, be prepared when you lose buy a few milliseconds or more to second guess the decision to go with R1s. I know I did, which is why Steve and I purchased the V710s last year. Now I know for sure that I am the slowest FS driver!

I think I'm going to go with the Hankooks actually since I can't get the V710's in less than 6-8 weeks.

I will probably second guess my decision to go with the 225/50's instead of 245's (still on the fence there), but thats another story.

the tradeoff for me on using 205's vs 225's (at least for track tires) is that while the 225's have more rubber and are really stable, my 4 squirrels had a harder time getting the additional rubber motivated. I found no difference in lap times. I'm thinking that the same problem may exist is the hp is limited with the bigger tires (at what point does the wider rubber start helping) I got an idea - buy both sizes and run them back to back. that will give you good data

Then I might stand corrected. Hey Bernie, can you PM me your guy's info? I am curious about putting a 305 V710 on a 8.5" rim. - AB

I've got rabbits, not squirrels, so that'll help me out for sure.

And someone tell me how he does the "lots of heat" thing. I'm curious.

The lots of heat trick is done, a) in cold weather with a kerosene fired forced air heater, and b) duing summer months by setting the tires in the sun for two hours or so rotating them from one side to the other. They prefer to do the mounting in the summer months because the heat is more even. But the real deal is the specialized air fitting he made for the Kumho's so as to allow the max amount of air into the tire through the valve stem without the valve installed. apparently you can't get enough air through a standard air hose fill valve.

Ask for Greg or Merill and tell them Bernie sent you.

Jeb mentioned that when he has flipped Khumo's, they have been a lot easier to dismount and remount than they are the first time as well, so the heat definitely has something to do with it.

I think that's maybe due to a stretch of the bead because of a heat build up. When Carter Thompson was mounting 285's on a 8" rim, he actually would mount them on a 10" rim, then drive them around to run the mold release off and get them warm, then dismount them and mount them on his 8" rims. Just that mounting and heat buildup caused enough stretch that it made mounting them the 2nd time easy. - AB

315s on a 8.5" rim?? Why? I get the feel good thing to a point. But for track or autocross. A tire that fat on a rim that skinny. I'd be curious about the contact patch and how much grip you truly get vs just mounting a 295 on said rim. I'm putting 315s on 10.5" rims and they say pretty square and I get full use of the tire at typical pressures. That is with Hoosier. Never used V710s or BFGs. Just seems like overkill and added expense. Does anyone have times on track or autocross to show good or bad?
