So, I'm looking into race rubber for the 3 and noticed on tire rack that the BFGR1 is a full $44/tire cheaper than the V710 in my size.

Is the V710 worth the extra money? I've read mixed reviews, but given that me and my wife might be co-driving this car this year, the extra longevity is certainly attractive to me. I don't want to be unreasonably cheap though, as I DO want to notice a difference in grip going from my Star Specs to R-comps. I can definitely feel a difference in the level of grip the mini had last year on V710's compared to mine.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

And to coincide with this a performance difference between the V710s/A6's/Kooks/BFG's

I considered going with 245/40/17 R1s if they can't get V710s in stock by 3/20...so I'm interested in the replies myself. Otherwise I'll just get some of those $145 used A6s.

It really comes down to what your objectives are imo. The R1s will last far longer than either the A6 or V710. If you could drive a 40 second course perfectly, the R1 would maybe be 0.3 to 0.4 seconds back? Something like that.

I said "perfectly" since the R1 is easier to drive near/at its limits imo compared to the A6. I found the A6 needed more and more slip angle as they heat up and were not as clean on communication back through the wheel. The R1 feels great to drive in that respect.

So it really comes down to being willing to give up a few tenths versus wear rate. Oh, and you really don't have to worry much about spraying R1s.

On the E46, whereas we corded the edges of some A6s in less than 20 runs, we got over 140 runs out of the R1s including flipping them.

For my camber challenged strut suspension mazda with co-driver and a limited budget, this is sounding better and better. . .

Seems like they want more heat in them than A6/v710s based on the reviews on TR. Given it's a strut car with 2 drivers, you shouldn't have a problem doing that in the 3. Giving up the rear bar for HS? or FSP?

In my case the v710 in my size is $40 cheaper than the R1.

Go V710 and don't look back.

We tried both on the camber challenged mustang. Both made it through a two driver full 8 event season. The V710's were faster at the beginning of the season and end.

Are the V710 in your size rounded or square shoulders?

I was wondering about this, which is better? My size are square.

Michael,

Are you running 285/30-18 V710s?

I think I read last year that the squared shoulders on the V's aren't good for camberless mcstrut machines like our cars but mine lasted all season and I plan to burn them off at the T-n-T. I don't think they made the traditional round shoulder ones in my size, iirc.

I've heard over A6's lasting 19 runs in my car (2 dr.) in Lincoln, with rotating but no flipping.

20 runs to 150 runs is quite remarkable for sure.

As Matt said, I would guess the rounded edges are better for cars without camber.

Yes, and we ran 245/40/18 R1s. Maybe not apples to apples. We really liked the v710s better. I think the season points show better to as the points race was much closer to Art.

The R1's do require alot of heat to work. Also in my experience on the Turtle it took a bit less air pressure than the V710's or A6's. It "could" have also just been my preference in grip. They even worked well as the tire we ran a complete HPDE weekend on. After a complete season I killed two of em off at VIR last October cording in the last session. Since I am codriving the meotter this year I am going to know what the purple crack is like as we are going brandy new A6's. The Turtle is going to be going with a set of used R1's for track days and sticky streets for the occasional autox.

Judi ran the square shouldered V710's on the camberless Focus last year and they made it through the season ok. We are going to attempt to make it through this season with both of us driving on them (a new set) and I have a feeling it's going to be close.

I didn't care for the R1's on the Mustang at all.

True, it is tough to compare 245s vs 285s -- would imagine that the 285 R1s would be closer but still slower.

Do you have any wasted 285/30 V710s? I'd like to get one to test fit for clearance.

Sorry, I sold the tires and wheels to Cash. He should be trying them in FS soon.

What size rim are you going to put them on? Jeb did not like mounting them on my stock 8.5" wheels
