I had a pleasant online experience today with Tradebit.com
They have down-loadable manuals for a variety of makes and models. We were looking for a 2005 Subaru manual and there were none available locally in the auto stores or book stores. We were able to download 1000 pages in PDF format that seems to have good information and graphics. Other manuals I have found on line have been scanned copies of FSMs, but these were native format PDF where the pages were straight and the margins were proper. (nothing is funkier than skewed copies with tapered margins unless you did it yourself)

Subaru used to have a website where you can pay a fee and download as much as you can for a couple of days or so. I think I got a link from Simon. You had to download each individual section of each manual separately, though. Couldn't just click on "2005 Subaru Impreza engine repair manual" or anything like that. I don't know if they're still doing that, but I'll look, since I'd like to get some manuals for the STi.
