 Post subject: Milling/turning aluminum wheel spacers

Anyone know a shop that will do this? I have some 5mm spacers I want down to ~2mm. One machine shop told me due to the holes, it would not be feasible to turn it since it will get hot and the chuck pressure might contort it as it gets thinner and thinner and this makes sense.

But couldn't it be milled with a vertical mill? Clamp it on one half on the table, take your passes on the unclamped side (slowly letting it cool), clamp the new side, take the passes on the other side...etc etc. If it warps a hair, that's not a big deal so long as it is consistent in thickness.

I am betting the place that milled Keith Vail's S2000 rears could do what you want. I don't know remember the name of the shop though. - AB

Aaron, while I'm thinking about it, I have a question for you.

Do you get any inboard rubbing in the rear on the STI with your 295s? Where I'm referring to is not the shock, but right where the top mount bolts to the chassis, there is a black plastic liner that covers the chassis in that area and since we have the double wishbone suspension back there, on compression the top of the tires comes inward as it gains camber. Seems the 09 WRX DS guys on 245s have a bit of rubbing in the back on compression, but looking at it right now with 225 star specs (which run wide) there is 7/8"-1" of gap so filling that with 10mm more tire, I don't see how it could rub, but who knows.

Anyway, this guy told me that all he needed was about 1.5mm of spacer to correct it. I want to run as little spacer in the rear as possible and all 6.35mm as I can upfront to help bias the car away from pushing.

I don't have any rub there with the 295's, but I do have a pair of 1/8" spacers that you can try to see if it corrects it. In order to make the handling bias good, you will need to run some toe out at events. From experience, a 1/4" in total track width won't change the handling enough that you notice... and if you notice it, it can be overcome by toe or air pressure.

I would save my money getting 5mm spacers cut down and buy some Longacre toe plates and play with rear toe a lot. While my car was oversteering too much at the NCAC, I was happy to find that I could make it too loose. I have found that on concrete I need less rear toe out than on asphalt, which makes sense... to me anyway. - AB

Maybe the degree to which the wrx pushes is greater than you sti by a lot ( your rear wheel rate is MUCH higher) but I felt a difference with the 5mm spacers up front on the last event (nothing in the rear). But I am going to get Mark to do two rear toe alignments for me and event the eccentric so I can tune the toe at the event.

Do those spacers work on 5x100 or 5x4.5" only?
