BMW, I'm done. And you're right. It did not kill me but it did make me stronger. I'm sticking with Jap and American from now on.

Mike,

Does this mean that you no longer recommend that I buy a used BMW?

Nah I still recommend them if you're willing to put up with the extra maintenance time and cost to get the benefit of the chassis refinement. I'm just reverting to a "simpler is better" phase of life!

As I told several people about E39 540's --- If you have 2 of these 3 you will enjoy owning the car:

1. Money to burn
2. Patience and time
3. Mechanical ability

I have #3 but am losing #2. So it's off to Honda and Subie for me.

You must have really lucked out on your LCA bushing. There are stories of those 17mm (or 19mm?) bolts not wanting to come out and then the welded nut on the inside of the chassis breaks and then you have to cut holes in the floor of your car to get to it so you can get the bolt out :). I'm glad you did not have that problem.

The right side was locked up solid. I agree I'm lucky it came out. 400 ft lb impact wouldn't budge the bolts at first, I had to use a 3' breaker to start the bolt, and even then it didn't "pop", it "squished" which freaked me out. Took the bug gun to unthread the rest of the way, lots of rust on the bolt. Went back in easy with some grease on the threads, so I assume the captive nuts are still ok!!

Strangely the left side had no issues at all, popped right out.

The new chassis Imprezas (GH/GR/GR/GV) have the rear LCA bushing on the LCA itself with a vertical pin on the chassis that goes through it. Unfortunately for me, that means that when I bust my bushings open from autocrossing, I'll need to remove the whole LCA and press the old one out and put the new one in :(. Might have to build a ghetto PVC press or something to get it out with the arm on the car :). Mike is this more BMW-ish for you?

You GC/GD folks have it easy :).

Hey guys, thanks for the offers. The guys at Turbotime hooked me up with a pair of used STi mounts for the price of one new. Just got them on, gonna try them tomorrow.

The STi mounts may still have fluid in them but they definitely have a higher metal to squishy stuff ratio than the stockers.

And Kevin of course you were right they bolted right up no problem at all.

I'm glad you did not have that problem.

Just to clarify, I think all GC/GD mounts will bolt to any other chassis in the range, but I think there are slight caster differences between the GC and GD. Meaning regardless of which mounts and which car you have, you should have 2 of the same bushing (as you have now Mike).

The caster difference is due to the shape of the control arm.

Also, I've changed a lot of those bushings, and never had a problem with them. Some have been tight, but as long as you're patient and don't do anything stupid, you shouldn't have any issues. And therein lies the problem.

Not me.

I'm in WAAYYYY too deep to change anytime soon.

I did haul 2 BMW's to the scrap place today, so there's that..... But it barely makes up for the 3 or 4 I've hauled in over the last couple of months....

That looks like about $300 of scrap value ... that about right?

I recycled an Integra last week for $140, no motor. I had bought the car for $100 with a motor :)

Keith already sold the 330 and replaced it with a Japanese rotary STX machine.... :toast:

I miss my M3 but with a Honda I don't worry about something expensive failing or needing repair. However, if money were no object, I'd want to race a laguna seca blue M3 in BS with A6's to burn.

Damn Mike, you're pretty close.

That load was $281.65.

Neither car had a motor or transmission, the top one only had one door and a rear QTR panel was sawn off of it.

The place I took them to was paying $10.75 per 100#, the highest of any scrap place I could find in the area.

Where did you take yours and what were they paying????

And people wonder why folks are always posting on CL and other places offering to haul off junk cars for free.........

Guess what I'll be doing in my free time for the foreseeable future???

:D

I've been going to Raleigh Metal Recyclers for like $0.07/lb. I'm lazy and that place is close and easy :) I have a load I am taking tomorrow of busted wheels, heads, etc ... hope to get $100-150 out of it. Love the "ATMs" that dispense cash. No wonder that people are stealing copper wire from parks, it's easy money.

Yeah, brass and copper are $$$ right now- have been for a while.

0.07 per lb is not bad- when I asked at LKQ they said $5 per 100. I used to take my scrap to them because they paid the same no matter if you left gas tanks, etc in the car, but most of the other scrap places make you take them out. Takes a little extra time, but the extra $$ is worth the effort to me, and the place I've been taking them to is as close to me as any others (LKQ, Raleigh Metal, TT&E, etc).

I have been taking a little extra time to make sure my aluminum parts are as "clean" as possible without spending too much time on them. By clean I mean taking off anything that's not aluminum like steel studs, brackets, etc. If the guy who sorts your stuff is on the ball, he'll give you a better price than for "dirty" aluminum.

I have a good size pile of aluminum bumper bars I need to clean and haul off.

Does that $10/100 place require empty fuel tanks? Part of the reason I went with Raleigh was that they didn't care about fuel or oil or about ANYTHING. The integra actually had bricks in the hatchback (no I did not put them there!). While I was pulling the motor, anything that came off that I didn;t want got tossed inside the car, not in the trash. So that was $0.07 per pound including bricks, gasoline, hoses, beer bottles, dirty rags, etc :)

So Bret, (warning, thread hijack) if one needed a good, all leavers work and not completely ripped to shreads, working driver seat for his DD E30, would you have something in your "farm" that could possibly work?

(end thread hijack)
