The mustang handled very well this weekend at CMP w/ the tokico d-specs and carbotech xp10 pads. After swapping tires for my last run on the 2nd day, the tranny was covered in oil and I had oil on the inside of the right rear wheel. I could see where the axle seal is leaking. Drove the car home and it’s now ready to be worked on. I have never dropped the tranny in a mustang and I’ve never done an axle seal.
Has anyone done either of jobs? Any gotcha’s I need to watch out for? Is there any place on line I can view the shop manual for an 07 GT? I have to try to get these fixed over the next few weeks so I can get ready for last autocross of the year for our club.
As a side note, just looked at the right rear wheel, and no oil what so ever after the 3 hour drive home. Tranny is still leaking and leaving a very small puddle under the car, so that has to be addressed. Since the axle seal is no longer leaking, should I still consider replacing?
Unless Ford has changed the axle venting system since 88, the oil on the axle is probably from the axle breather . . . assuming you had a fair amount of high G left turns. No big deal except for the mess. Been there, done that. FYI there is info around on solving the axle vent issue. I may have it somewhere on my computer at home. The simple solution is replacing the fitting which currently may have a "jiggle cap" with a fitting you can put a hose on and running the hose to a catch can. I think, however, that there is a better/neater solution. You might check Maximum Mustangs or Griggs.
Regarding the trans, beats me. Are you sure it is trans oil? Did you happen to overfill it if you changed the oil? Is there a breather near the front? Is it dripping from the clutch housing area (i.e. front trans seal or rear engine seal)? FYI if the trans vent seems too far to the rear for where the oil is, it "could" be due to turbulence sending the oil mist 'everywhere". You can hope.
Also, do the SN197's have a hydraulic clutch? If so, any chance it is clutch fluid?
