Zach, I think they are full of it...they can remove the flange from your old diff and put it on the new one. It's one big bolt and they snap out and snap in.

That's what I'm reading online as well. It looks like there are concerns preloading the bearings and such and it has to be done in the correct way, but isn't very involved.

Check this out: http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?s= ... ic=771501# (scroll down to S2KPUDDYDAD's post, for some reason I can't link directly to the post).

I'm going to take this to the shop and see what they say.

Yes, his post is excellent, the key is to not compress the crush sleeve any more than it currently is. A diff/tranny shop should know how to do this with a bandanna around their eyes :). They are likely trying to tell you that they want to install a new crush sleeve (which means a full disassembly of the diff) if they are going to untorque the pinion nut, but if they are careful, it isn't necessary.

Looks like my options at this point are:

1. Let them replace the diff input flange (or take it to someone more competent) and hope that it doesn't damage the crush sleeve. Jake's said that they would not warranty this work if they did that. No more parts to buy, but potentially risky.

2. Buy the drive shaft and transmission output flange from the same car as the diff I purchased, and not touch the diff output flange. Parts will cost $250, and I am told replacing the transmission flange is dead easy.

I'm still waiting on a call back from Mark at Performance Chassis with his recommendation after groveling and telling him how I should've taken it to them in the first place... He also said earlier that he has successfully replaced flanges before (although not on S2K), and certainly seemed more confident than the guy at Jake's.

On e36 bimmers, swapping the input flange is extremely common when putting an LSD diff into a car with an open diff or a m3 LSD diff into a non m3 3series, so I'm pretty sure Mark has done that countless times.....without opening the diff up and replacing the crush sleeve :).

Hey Zach - have you posted your questions on s2ki, maybe in the Carolinas area? There's a guy named Dustin there, who goes by the handle "sgtB." IIRC, he has done at least one diff replacement before, and is very knowledgeable and friendly. I betcha he'd be able to advise you on how best to proceed. He's a great guy.

There might also be some clues on s2kca.com, under the "XViper's Den." They were threatening to make the Den available only to dues paying club members, but you might still be able to read (and not post) there.

Ended up going with a new propeller shaft (drive shaft) and transmission output flange from the same '05 that I got the diff out of (thanks again, Jeremy!). After a slight delay with some missing bolts (Crown Honda Southpoint failed to get the parts overnight as they said they would; HPD had the parts overnighted and even offered Early A.M. Saturday delivery), Jake's installed everything earlier today and I drove the car to work! Didn't get it into VTEC yet, but all seems well so far (no noise or vibration or leakage). I had them fill it with Mobil 1 75W-90 fluid after Crown tried to sell me Valvoline fluid (they claimed "there is no such thing as Honda OEM diff fluid," even though I have an old bottle of it in my garage).

Here it is installed: http://xak.us/fixeddiff.jpg

Hopefully it will hold up for many street miles and autocrosses to come.

A big thanks, once again, to everyone who offered their advice and provided assistance with this. Cheers!

Glad you got it sorted, Zach, that's great!

I'm surprised about Crown Honda of Southpoint. I've been buying some parts from them recently, and have been pretty impressed with them. Everything has shown up in one day and as ordered. I've just been ordering little small stuff, but for that, I've found their prices to be competitive with Majestic Honda once I factor in shipping and handling. Majestic wanted close to $15 in S&H to ship me four rubber grommets and two rubber moldings for the rear fender arches!

I just went VTECing around a bit and perma-smile ensued... seems good so far. :-D

As for parts, I can't recommend HPD enough. I challenge you to find better prices on any OEM part.

I'll definitely use them next time. I had forgotten that you told me how fast they ship stuff. I was after the pieces I've gotten recently in kind of a hurry.

Webpage for HPD anyone?

Sorry if I missed it. A google search for HPD is coming up with Honda Performance Development, which appears to offer racing parts only.

That's exactly it. The "racing parts" they speak of are simply OEM Honda parts (I think). I'm not aware that they offer performance parts other than stock. If they do, let me know :-D

It appears you must be a member to order parts from HPD, and membership requires that you are "able to prove current membership in a nationally recognized sanctioning body", which I'm not. Bummer.
