Whoa! How does that work? Basically you use a 315mhz transmitter to match the frequency of the TPMS?

I have a feeling that doesn't hardwire in as easily as say, a radar detector.

Well, mostly I was being ridiculous, but yes. Of course, you'd have to reverse engineer the secret code somehow, then build a custom circuit board...

The mustang guys would go nutz for this. They all hate the TPMS.

+ 111 bazilion.....

It's just another piece of electronic tom foolery that you have to deal. If it wasn't for stupid people not taking responsibility for their own safety and lawyers, we wouldn't be dealing w/ this issue. Drive on track w/ out the TPMS and the thing goes off w/ a chime and dash warning light. They are supposed to reset once you've driven 40+ miles w/ the monitors back in place.

Maybe the TPMS are here because of the demise of the corner gas station where Ma and Pa Kettle came in and the boys in the overalls jumped all over the car. They would pump gas, checked oil, fill tires and the lot.

Now that people are on their own, I guess this is the electronic version of the gas station attendant.

Now, all my bitching aside, it did warn me once a few months after I had the car that I had a low tire. I was only down to 25lb and it went off. While the mustang version is not tire specific, I did spot the low tire. Turns out it had a nail in it. A quick fix w/ my ever present tool bag and tire plug set, I was back on the road w/ nary a problem.

Well, as a safety engineer I would be a hypocrit (remember an earlier post where I ranted against hypocrits, especially me) to object to safety devices . . . even if the solution is spending more money to get more sensors and the tools to reset them (fyi Tirerack seems to have some relatively low cost solutions that work with Ford TPMS).

Considering how many tires get nail/slow leaks that only the most anal drivers (i.e. us) will spot prior to a flat/blowout or even just terminal damage to an expensive tire it doesn't sound too bad to me. I've had rental cars with slow leaks that could have been caught by Hertz with TPMS. My analness prevented problems. What about the average guy/gal in Atlanta, etc. traffic rushing to a client or back to the airport?

We can always look at it as "if it is good enough for F1, etc. its good enough for me  )

I have been told, by the best authority I can muster at this time, that the VSA-ish systems and the TPMS are unrelated. Honestly, it seems unlikely to me, since it's a matter of programming one system to compensate for another and it's a matter of safety. It's also naturally a trade secret. Chips talk to each other easily! But then again, Windows 95 happened. So who am I to argue?
