One of these days my wife and I will finally replace a Mustang . . . possibly with a smaller more practical car. :(

Are any of the VW's reliable for say the first 10 - 12 years of their life assuming automatic transmission, easy driving, and good routine maintainence? We would buy new.

Keep in mind that our idea of reliable is Mustangs that are more reliable than people think Toyotas are.

Dick

Yeah, they are pretty reliable for 10-12 months. Oh, you said years...

Just like any other German car Dick. Give it about 36 months and the instrument cluster will slowly but surely light up like a tree at Christmas....that is until those lights burn out.

Thanks for the responses. I don't want one anyway and this info should help keep any possible interest Kelly may have "under control".

Found out at Trackdaze that the new Jetta's can be ordered as a TDI Cup edition. Pretty sweet looking with understated plaid seats and a body kit with larger wheels. Did not address the reliability issue tho. Maybe you get a pit crew as well.....

My last car was a 98 VW Beetle and I will NEVER AGAIN own a VW. The service department at the dealership in Durham is the WORST ever. They are lying bastards and my extremely cute POS needed a new engine at just over 50K miles (just past warranty). I'm still mad about it. You should get a Mini instead :)

Unfortunately VW decided to be dumb and only make ~2500 of the Cup Editions rather than make it a trim package. If it would have been a trim package, I am sure they would sell alot more than 2500 of them but instead, they are stuck. Stupid marketing FTL! :-/

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I think Whitney said it was the only German car he owned that he truely hated.

My Experience has been pretty bad as well. I guess if you call combusting in the driveway and buring to the ground reliable.

When did Mini's become reliable? :) At least when they first came out all the reports from the few non-autocrosser owners I knew were pretty horrible. :(

FYI, my wife's brother's wife bought a used turbo beetle convertible. Apparently the dealer (in Durham I assume) is either "less than competitent or less than honest") Last I heard there was a check engine light issue. :(

I've seen my neighbor's Mini get flatbedded out to go to the dealer for service twice already. I've lived here for almost a year now.

I heard there is a good Mini Dealer in Greenville who has a slightly dented Clubman for sale.

My first car was a 1969 Beetle which was actually very reliable.
