Tips/tricks of buying a car for another person

I am looking to buy a used car for my mother. She is giving me the money to handle the transaction (cash), the car will be in her name, will probably be purchased in NC, but titled/registered in WV. I am not exactly sure how this would go down other than me giving the seller the money, but the bill of sale listing my mother as the person who is buying the car?

Get details sorted out and a bill of sale then have the seller go to the DMV for the title transfer with you and have your mom meet you there for the notarized transaction.

Sorry, should have mentioned this, but she most likely will not be able to be here when the transaction takes place. Purchase most likely to be from a used car dealer. Also the car will not be titled in NC.

Ask the dealer?

Seriously, that's what I would do. If she can't be there, then it should not be a problem for the seller to fill out the title in front of a notary- filling in your mom's name as the buyer- then giving the paperwork to you to give to mom. The notary is only notarizing the release of the title from the seller, then your mom will have to have the title paperwork, and her signature, notarized when she applies for a new title in her name.

At least that's how I understand it- like I said, ask the dealer to get a more informed answer.

Talk to Chip Stabler up at atlantic auto exchange. Even if you don't buy a car from him, he can give you some answers. He supports the club and has an ad in the H&T. I'm sure he'll be happy to help.

My dad sold me his truck some time ago... I showed up to the DMV with myself, the title, and power of atturny for my father. I own the truck. I cant remember much more of the details as it has been over 3 years now.

I am guessing it's pretty much as you say that they may not care as they are just releasing the title and it's up to her to title in WV. Now selling a car that isn't yours would be more tricky (require some type of power of attorney).
