It did finish but spent a significant amount of time either in the pits or behind the wall. I believe they were chasing electrical gremlins. It ran like a raped ape down the straights though. I watched it pass the ITE Civic Si hatch down the front straight only to be out braked by it into 1. But it was a T3 car so it had stock brakes and wheels and minimal suspension work, plus a full interior.

I can't imagine that a 2.2 liter would be any more strained than the engine in the RSX was. I can understand the door opening issue with driver's taller than myself. I am just a hair under 6'1".

I'm with Keith on the comparison between a 2.2L S2000 and the RSX. I believe that one or more of the magazines ran S2000 CRs in the 25 hours of Thunderhill last year, so you might go look for that if you're after longevity information.

You'd also be sitting on a pretty sweet ITR car once the 2.2L gets classed, which I think is just a matter of writing the letter to the ITAC.

BMWCCA IP

Plenty of good cheap used cars out there, well known package to get them under 2:10s consistently. Just check out any VIR race results -- here's one with the top 5 or so finishers all running 2:07. And as was mentioned, Denis' car does 2:06's

http://www.bmwccaclubracing.com/_Upload ... evised.pdf

There's not a lot of heavy work done to these cars to get them this fast. Bottom ends are stock but as Dustin mentioned there's work on the engine management, and cams, to get the wHP numbers up there.

I'd imagine that a sorted IP car is going to get better mpg and might be more reliable than a Vette.

Yeah, I already checked out those results and have been conversing with Brian Watts today a LOT. An IP type car is definitely where I'm leaning right now. As you said, they're already sub-2:10 cars and an IP legal car has a LOT of room to remove weight for ITE. Brian Marks' car looks pretty good currently, but I'm still poking around a bit. It's got a S50B32 in it with some updates and with full AC and a good bit of interior it's run a 2:09 with James Clay behind the wheel. Wouldn't be hard to get it lighter and make it handle a little better (better shocks, springs, and bushings, at least).

Only problem with that car is it looks too pretty to turn into a real race car. Almost. ;)

Marty, that 996 and the e36 both look interesting, but being on the west coast is kind of a downer. *sigh*

Amen, brother!

I actually thought about one of those, but even those have problems. Fast driver changes aren't easy, for one. For another we're back with the MPG problem, too.

But I do want one. Kinda bad. But it must be a Bill Elliott car.

How much does it cost to get the required HP out of a bmw?

Because here's an easy/cheap 400hp.

Good Lord. 500HP in a box!
http://www.sdparts.com/product/19211710 ... ngine.aspx

I doubt you'll beat the reliability of these engines with anything that's been opened up to get more power. With that kind of hp, just install a spare fuel cell. You can call it ballast. :)

Donnie, are "fast" driver changes really that much of an issue? I thought that ECRs have a required 2-minute period for any pit stop. At least that was the case when I ran them. I raced both a Miata and a Civic, and we never had any trouble at all getting the driver changes done in time. Most of the time, we ended up sitting there, waiting for the 2 minutes to pass, everything all buttoned up and ready to go.

I haven't been to the 13 hour in a crew capacity for a couple years now, so I don't know if the 2 minute thing applies there.

Okay, I know GM stuck their hands in our pockets and took our money, but doesn't part of you want to support a company that will produce something like this:

http://wot.motortrend.com/6602262/after ... index.html

That's aimed directly at supporting hobbyist.

2 minutes does apply, but you have to get the first driver out COMPLETELY. Then you fuel. Once that's done COMPLETELY, then the second driver can enter the car.

Now, if you have a 25 gallon cell and a good overhead fuel rig, which we do, you can fuel the entire thing in about 50 seconds. We might be able to get that down with a double hose setup on the next car (we have one hose now and the vent is in the car, but a double hose vents through a bigger hose and will take fuel a LITTLE bit faster). But 2 seconds per gallon is nothing to sneeze at. Or smoke near. ;)

That's if everything goes perfect. But it rarely does. You have to realistically figure you've got about 50 seconds left of the 2 minutes to get the second driver in and fully buckled. That would be cake if everyone was a professional on the same team every week. But since we're not, we've generally been a LITTLE tardy in the RSX. Anywhere from 5-10 seconds, which isn't a big deal (so we haven't worked on it much, either). With more work, we could probably get a ten second cushion, maybe. But part of that is thanks to a big door and easy access to everything. With the RSX we extended the steering pretty far and put the seat pretty far back (and with a separate pedal box that was easy). Helps with weight balance and makes using a halo seat a lot less of an entrance/exit issue, too. I don't think I could have one of those in a Spec Miata, for example, and try a fast driver change. They have them in the MER MX-5's and they seriously get in the way.

But with the bigger fuel cell comes the need for faster driver changes.

Jason, believe me, I know about the 500HP in a box. I'll be buying something similar for my next One Lap car, most likely. But it won't be in a Vette. More on that as it develops. ;)

Just curious: Are Nissan 350Z's contenders? They would seem to be in between the S2000's and the Vettes.

Hadn't really considered a 350Z. Don't know that much is going on in the race support side for those things, though. *shrug*

There's quite a few T2 ones around now. They did OK, but in a more open class they would do better.

edit:

GT2 - JOM GOUGHARY - NISSAN 350Z 1:59.396 04/19/09
GT3 - D RICHARD BUSHEY NISSAN 350Z 2:03.100

and a 100% T2 350Z came in 9th overall last year at the 13 hour.
