Does BMWCCA still race under a 13/13 rule?

Craig Gelston sold his C4 vette a month ago for 18K. It, or rather he, turns 2:03's and in the UTCC I believe he got down to 1:59. The vette will get there for the least amount of outlay.

you never said it had to be pretty. I just happened to come across this while looking something else up. There are also a few ST1 cars for sale on the NASA site. I also agree that a good T1 car may just be the ticket.

but consistant Sub 2:10's is a serious feat. Especially for 13 hrs.

Heck, even David's monster Ultima GT-R has barely done those times.

Dunno who David is, but either he can't drive or his Ultima is on street tires.

David can drive, but yes the car was on street tires and he is still sorting it out.

Obviously we know an E36 can be bulletproof enough to run fast for 13 hours. However I am having a hard time not looking at a Vette when the T1 track record is a 2:01. For god's sake that is only a T1 car. I am sure you could bullet proof the drivetrain and cooling systems and drop some weight from T1 along with adding a dry break fueling system with a large cell and you have your car. Just not sure what class that would fall into to get it legal for ITE.

I dunno...the CMC track record is 2:14 and that is race conditions. An American Iron Mustang would probably get you what you need. The parts are plentiful, cheap and the technology is simple.

But the platform is not exotic and you have to drive the cars. Would I want to drive a solid rear-axle for 13 hours?

One problem I'm finding with V8 powered cars is mileage. In my research, it's looking like 6MPG is REALLY high for a bowtie car, anyway. Most are around 5, some UNDER that. That's just too limiting, IMHO. Given that fuel stops mean a minimum of 2 minutes in the pits, you lose a lap for each one, basically. We've got drivers that can easily do 2 hours in a decent car and I'd like to take advantage of that.

My other fear is fiberglass body panels. Maybe that's irrational, but this race can be a little hard on the bodywork. I don't think classing a Vette in ITE will be a problem at all. Right now anything "NASA ST" is legal, and Danny Popp's OMG Vette is the NASA ST-1 VIR Full record holder.

What kind of mileage were you getting with the RSX? We were going between 2 hours 15 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes in the ITA car with a 23 gallon cell. We never put more than 21 gallons in it. I never actually sat down and figured out what our MPG was for the race though.

I definitely understand about the fiberglass bodywork holding up for the 13 hour race since it is rather hard on body panels with all those different classes out there.

Another idea that should net you close to the same fuel mileage but better power and RWD would be an S2000 built up to run ITE. It has true metal body panels, is relatively light so should be easy on tires, very well balanced. Just a thought.

We got just over 10MPG when the motor was fresh, but it seemed to drop off just a little lately. That's pretty dang good for a sub-2:10 car, I gotta think. Last year we could EASILY go 2:30 with a 25 gallon cell.

My main fear with that car is longevity. That's one high strung motor already. The other fear, which may not be an issue, is driver changes. I *hate* that part about the SM, but I know the doors are a little longer in an S2000. But that opening still seems kind of small in the window area of the hard top, then the cage is gonna be tight. Leh is 6'4" or so and I'm over 6'2", so I really like a larger opening than I think the S2000 is gonna give me. It's a good idea otherwise, though. I'm sure they're great on track.

Did that one finish in this year's race? I never looked.

It did finish but spent a significant amount of time either in the pits or behind the wall. I believe they were chasing electrical gremlins. It ran like a raped ape down the straights though. I watched it pass the ITE Civic Si hatch down the front straight only to be out braked by it into 1. But it was a T3 car so it had stock brakes and wheels and minimal suspension work, plus a full interior.

I can't imagine that a 2.2 liter would be any more strained than the engine in the RSX was. I can understand the door opening issue with driver's taller than myself. I am just a hair under 6'1".

BMWCCA IP

Plenty of good cheap used cars out there, well known package to get them under 2:10s consistently. Just check out any VIR race results -- here's one with the top 5 or so finishers all running 2:07. And as was mentioned, Denis' car does 2:06's

http://www.bmwccaclubracing.com/_Upload ... evised.pdf

There's not a lot of heavy work done to these cars to get them this fast. Bottom ends are stock but as Dustin mentioned there's work on the engine management, and cams, to get the wHP numbers up there.

I'd imagine that a sorted IP car is going to get better mpg and might be more reliable than a Vette.

I will not argue that point. I get about 7 mpg on full course and 5 or so at a track like Summit and CMP.
