They should put the shape of the La Source runoff back to where it was a while back. Keep the asphalt runoff, but cut the barrier back in after a short distance so you have to make a sharp turn to get back onto track.
Or perhaps better yet, put Valencia-style speed bumps down towards the end of the merge lane that Kimi used. Let Kimi take the fast exit in the runoff if he doesn't mind ripping up his undertray.
But with Kers and the Kemmel straight it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Kimi would gain places. He'd just have gained them at the end of the straight instead of the approach to Eau Rouge. With the safety car, he could have been in 4th at the restart and still made it to the lead.
I must admit I'm kind of old school in terms of "If you didn't want me to drive on it, you wouldn't have paved it." Put three feet of pseudograss between the track and all those new asphalt runoffs and the problem is solved with virtually no safety cost. The Les Combes runoff is perfect.
Drivers will just have to learn to drive on the track again instead of just keeping two wheels on it, but I'm sure they can manage that, and we won't have any drama about gaining an advantage.
Don't want people to be able to gain an advantage in the runoff? Design it so they can't. Are you listening, Herman Tilke?
Depends, a grass barrier would potentially give the car a place to flip. I agree though with the statement that if they don't want it used to an advantage then don't pave it (or pave near it) (or put a gator there that is not too high) (or...)
I do think that if it was continued to be used to gain an advantage, they would have at least received a cease and desist warning, or else it would have been used. The KERS is only being used by McLaren and Ferrari and apparently Ferrari's works better. I'm not a big fan of it, but several teams spent a bunch of money on it only to have it discontinued at the end. Spend a dollar to save a quarter........
