beyond the destruction of vehicles i wonder about those taking these rebates. more specifically, when i drove a clunker i couldn't afford car payments. who pays when these loans are defaulted on and the cars are repo'd?

HOLY CRAP!!! Steve and I agree on something!!!!!!

See my post in my notes section on Facebook to see how I feel about this whole thing.

Something else to consider...What is the environmental impact of sending thousands of cars to the junk yard? I'm gressing they didn't think about that.

It makes me sick that this somehow got passed... No wonder they are having to pass legislation at 3am....

At least they could of used a GM or fiat/mopar as Volvo/Ford didn't even take a bailout.

does anyone else feel duped since 1/20/09

hope and change eh

Yeah, why not just GIVE these cars that are still in decent if not nice shape to people who will never be able to afford a new car, so that really nasty polluters can be removed from the highways? (i.e. the type of old, neglected car that spews enough unburned hydrocarbons to make up for 100-200 new cars). Instead, we the taxpayer will pay money to destroy potentially fine cars...at least fine to folks who can't even afford these so-called "clunkers."

Then again, Fannie Mae is now approving home loans again with 105% financing, at taxpayer expense (and risk exposure) of course, so to expect any form of sanity to prevail with this Congress is asking for way too much. Bills are rammed through with extreme partisan content without the responsible members even reading and understanding the contents. Perhaps just one of the many reasons Congress has the lowest approval rating in history. I can't help but hear BTO singing, "you ain't seen nothing yet" for some reason.

People are so STUPID! Don't they realize they are losing money turning in a vehicle worth more than 4500. on the open market?
Problem is the clunkers won't go to a junkyard, they will be crushed and sold to the Chinese etc. to make steel they can sell back to us.

PS: I saw a Hummer on the side of 540 about a week ago, The owner was standing there watching as it burned to the ground.

We have contracts with several dealerships (wagners auto) to pick up there cash for clunkers crap. It is a damn shame what they do to the motors. We have 6 months before the cars have to be crushed and recycled. The vin numbers are trashed for ever. The cars can not even be title under "salvage" or "rebuilt" titles. It doesnt make any sense.

I agree that when I drove something clunkerish (not on purpose) I couldnt affford a car payment even with 4500 down payment!!! So how many of these new cars are gonna turn into repo's in 6 months to a year???

Some cars that I know we have coming in on this
99 silverado
00 ranger 3.0 2wd
93 chevy box van
several 94-99 explorers
a few mid 90s caravans/voyagers
86 mercy 560 sel!!!!

Just makes me shake my head.

Unless you've been brainwashed by the republicrats to think there are only two options, there were other people on the ballot.

I am not saying I agree with this program, but...

Would it make more sense to give people money for their cars and then put them right back into the system if the idea is to (a) get people to buy new cars (b) remove cars from circulation that don't meet a specific MPG threshold? Lets flood the market with a bunch of cheap, but still working salvage titled cars?

Yeah, in that NY Times article about this "program" they showed what appeared to be a 1988 BMW E28 535i ready to get destroyed. The M30 motor in those cars is indestructible (until now) practically not to mention how tough an E28 is in general. I still find it amazing that all of these "clunkers" could not be used in a much more useful fashion, but this is what you get with a centrally administered government program. The truly needy folks out there who could benefit greatly from a clunker are left behind so people can go further into debt to "buy a new car". I suppose healthcare is the next government takeover. I'm still wondering how many of these 105% financed Fannie Mae backed home loans going out the door today are going to be belly-up in a couple of years, but what's another few hundred billion dollars in debt (as long as China keeps buying our bills/notes/bonds that is).

So who are these people that are being left behind. I am assuming you are talking about people who can't afford to buy much better than $500 used cars?

So lets spin this another way. The government buys a bunch of cars that don't get great mileage, but do have life left in them. Then then effectively give them away to people, but we would have to come up with some rules that say "poor people" get them. All of this as tax payer expense? How far would that idea fly?
