"California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she spoke with Gov. Schwarzenegger this morning about what can be done to stop the closure of the Fremont Toyota plant, suggesting federal stimulus money might be tapped to prevent losing the 4,500 jobs immediately at risk and the 35,000 estimated to be indirectly affected.

A letter is about to go out from Feinstein, Sen. Barbara Boxer and Bay Area Reps. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, Mike Thompson, D-Napa and Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, to Toyota Corp. president Akio Toyoda offering to work with the company. The Democrats said they want to hear ideas from Toyoda about what might be done to prevent the closure.

The Toyota move to start liquidating the plant by the end of August was triggered by GM's withdrawal from a joint manufacturing venture known as the New United Manufacturing, Inc. with Toyota.

I used to live near that plant (Santa Clara and Milpitas). Toured it once when it still built intermediate size GM cars. Auto assembly plants, even then, are impressive examples of supply chain coordination. Parts coming from various locations, steel being stamped/welded, paint booths, and then assembly.

I also autocrossed at the Ford San Jose plant where my 1969 Mustang was assembled . . . that I ordered through vendors in the PX in DaNang, Vietnam.
