That video is awesome. One of the reasons why BBC Top Gear kicks arse. - AB

Oh hell, if I was as tall as Michael Jordan, I'd be in the NBA. If I had Shawn White's snowboard, I'd be getting 35 feet of air at the X-Games. If I had Kurt Busch's ride I'd be winning NASCAR races. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...

My point here is that every weenie with a car fetish looks at that and goes "I could do that." Then when challenged it's "oh, I need the $200k" car. Then "oh, I need all the practice he put into it." "Oh, I don't have the facility." Etc. Never is it "damn, that guy has more talent than me."

I don't know if he does or he doesn't. He might not have the talent but may have spent his way there by getting the best car and buying or renting everything else he needed and then spending insane amounts of time perfecting what little bit of talent he does have to the point of greatness. But to say it's just another piece of driving that anyone in the club could go out and do is, well, wrong. It's a pet peeve of mine that's all too often applied to awesome displays of drifting talent. That's some GREAT driving.

Does the guy have a big ego? Hell yeah. Would I want to be his buddy? Probably not. But I think I've got above average driving skills and I'm not diluted enough to think I could go out and do what he does in that video, edited or not. Could I with a LOT of practice and that car? Dunno. It's possible. But the amount of "practice" would probably be more than a few days of monkeying around. More like months, if not years.

Any idiot can do a donut, sure. I want to see how long it takes you to perfect JUST the donut to the level that you could somewhat safely doing it around a moving Segway rider. Or just fly into a curved area and do a drift with your bumper in JUST the right place. I've done that kind of stuff not too long ago on snow. It's a bit less predictable than pavement, but you also get to try it a LOT slower (and this was two straight days of school in a controlled environment with GROOMED snow). It's easy to drift. It's hard to do it in a controlled manner. It's VERY hard to do it to a high degree of precision.

And heck, I gotta think it's harder to do all that stuff with AWD than it would be in a RWD car. It's got to be, I don't care how "good" the setup is.

You can wake up at 5am every morning, starting when you were 6. You can become a world class figure skater and win all of the gold medals that you can. Then, at some random ice rink, a high school hockey player skates up to you, slides to a stop throwing ice on you and calls you a fucking pussy. And he's right. That's drifting vs any other motorsport.

Did I miss a post where someone claimed that they could do something like what is shown in this video?

Apparently. Kevin said this:

Quote:
There are lots of nasiocers who think he's totally the best driver in the world, brah! But there are plenty of people in this club alone who could do the same stuff he's doing. It's still fun to watch, though.

I thought for sure this was going to get all Tonya Harding and it didn't. That's quite a let-down, Wes.

What I think this touches upon that is really unsaid is the level of ego involved in motorsports even at the grassroots level. I am absolutely the last person to trash talk, etc. and consider myself to be pretty laid back and modest most of the time. But I can acknowledge the existence of my own ego. I think I am a better than average driver and part of me thinks “If I had his resources, I could do that”. But I have to concede that he probably is a better driver than I will ever be.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

oh he is def. a good driver.

but he got that way by practice. So does does else.

even Jordan, the guy was horrible in highschool, he wasnt born with it.

But Tiger, the guy was kicking ass at age 4, thats close enough to say he was born with it, lol.

I think a legit argument is "if i had his resources, i could do that". and i could, and i think a lot of people could (im talking tons of folks).

and by resources i am talking about Car, crew, practice sessions, skills and all that jazz.

But the guy does have talent, I think he actually started to Rally in like 2004 or something (From what i caught on another video, not sure on anything prior to that).

So thats 5 years of driving. pretty darn impressive.

I didn't say he sucked, I just said that lots of other people could do that, given the same resources he's had. I'm a big fan of Ken Block; I just don't worship him as a lot of others do. And I don't look at something like this and say, "Man, I could never do that - I'm just a talentless hack." I'm sitting there thinking, "Man, it would be so much fun to do that." I don't even consider it a possibility that I couldn't do it; I just think about how much fun it would be to learn. Maybe that makes me an arrogant prick in your eyes, but I don't really give a shit. :D

Still feeling argumentative? Go pick on Chuck Frank.

It's all fine and dandy that he's a good driver. I don't have a problem with that. I just wish he'd go back to making shoes.

Well, he does sell shoes. And he makes sweet videos of drifting that all the shoe-buying kiddies love to watch. So why not combine the two and make even more money? Did you get tired of seeing Michael Jordan videos promoting Nike shoes, etc.? Cause I did.

:P

Meeehhh, you could havce done what Michael did, you just needed his resources. Talent is over rated anyway right? Wait, Michael has talent, and resources...maybe he can drive like Ken Block! :poke:
