Don't let the fun factor mask all the WORK that is involved. Much like autocross and most other motorsports, the time spent driving is MUCH less than the time spent working.

Also for anyone who is under the illusion you can build a car for $500 and race it for 24 hours...well you can't...not even close.

Want to come be crew chief for us this year to see what it's all about on the weekend?

but of course those expenditures above the $500 limit are safety related.

i said safety related. please remember that particular phrase. in no way has Team Magnum PU exceeded their $500 budget other than items exempted due to safety requirments. got it? Good. 8)

How true on the $500 car. Safety equipment is a broad category covering rollbars, brakes, exhaust, driver equipment, etc. I think the car is the cheapest part of the whole deal.

Overall it is a lot of fun. Meet new people, work on cars, shade tree engineering and a good time at the track. Check it out with us all in Sept.

p.s. ditto what Steve said, nobody ever spends more than the $500 on a car...

More updates from this past weekend. Since the roll bar didn’t fit (or so we thought) Stephen and I worked on other stuff. When we went to re-install the valve cover Stephen discovered this on the inside:

Image

We flipped it over to discover a big glob or RTV on the outside that somebody had used to seal the cracked valve cover. We removed it and cleaned it up with a Scotch-brite pad to reveal this:

Image

I was surprised to see the RTV must have held because there was no leak near the RTV. We fixed the hole/crack with JB Weld just because…well RTV isn’t even a Ryan-approved solution!

We also removed all the cross bars from the front bumper to allow more cool air to the radiator (via the sawzall) and re-installed it. Next we welded the right side headlight cover to the hood to make our “Redneck Cram Air” for the intake too. Since we had to grind off the paint to weld it, we painted that part black. Here is the result:

We also did an actual test of the new driver cooling system. Stephen put on the cool shirt, I filled the cooler with water and ice and hooked it up…works like a champ.

No worse then spending years working on a car (my 914) with no real hope of seeing it running anytime soon. :)

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I don't want to commit until I am sure I can do it. So I may spectate at one this year and then jump in with both feet next year.

I hear ya, but I just can't start a project with no real end in sight. I have patience, but not nearly enough for a project that literally takes "years".

Obviously we have a deadline, and that drives us to get it finished.

It sort of is. Or at least I am building the car I have always wanted (Porsche or not). I really didn't plan on it taking this long, but I am not going to stop now. Still doesn't keep me from wanting to do a bunch of other things such as LeMons. :) With my point being that I have no problem with doing the work required for a LeMons team. Budget is another story.

get an early start on the car and team. Much easier to reduce the costs when you have lots of time to shop around and spread the expenses over a longer period. Last year when we did LeMons, we had 2 months to get it all done. This time we had a year so each month get time and money allocated. It is also better to have plenty of time to search out the right car.

Of course about a month after you buy a car and start the build, about 25 other/better ones will pop-up on Craigslist. :x

This is true. Just get one of those for your donor car. You can switch all the least crappy parts over to one car and drag the other to the race for parts just in case.
