Way too much to get done to post, but had to give huge thanks to Sean O'Connell for for all the hard work that let us at least see the checkered under power.
Thanks also to the rest of the Dogs, Magnum PU, and Grim Reaper for help, and in the case of GR the awesome spread. Thanks too to Dustin and Mike for getting thier hands dirty in the last mad scramble to make the dog run.
Thanks Bret for your extensive knowledge of bustified BMW's - and for pushing the Bimmerforums team off the track - you saved Steve's honor.

Why do you need a properly built roll cage in a $500 car race? Ask this guy in the RX-7:

New Wheel Studs are your friend

Man did we see some crappy things that passed for what one would call a roll cage.

It's Monday night, and I'm still dead tired from all of this racing nonsense. Things obviously didn't go that well for us, but the camaraderie made the weekend pretty fun. A bad weekend racing is still better than working. :D

It's been said before, but I will say it again. Sean O'Connell is good people. When the car was functional, he did an excellent job as spotter for us. When we were DBU (done blowed up), he worked tirelessly with Kendt to swap cylinder heads.

Massive props to Kendt for his efforts before, during and after DBU.

All around thanks to Walter for his wrenching efforts, advice, and relentlessly positive vibe. If there is anyone who can make you feel good about a less than optimal situation, it's Walter.

Then there's Steve "Drinkin' buddy" R...my esteemed wrench-challenged brotha, trailer hauler, and Budweiser supplier.

I was afraid to step on the scale today because of all the fine food from team Grim Reaper. Mark Barnes and crew clearly made an impression on us, and did some mighty fine driving to boot.

Thanks to Mike Whitney, Dustin Fredrickson, and Bret Luter for wrenching and guidance as we tried to pump some life into Dieter.

I think I can hear the "get off stage" music starting...

Glad to help you guys out even if it was just pouring water, holding a flashlight, and loaning some tools :) More fun to help than just sit around and watch the race! Was nice to see our spare block keep running in the ice cream truck Civic all day Sunday, and we gave some spare rod bearings to some other team with a D-series motor, not sure if they made it back on track.

Best advice I got all weekend was from Walter, "Get a different car" :) Well I'm a glutton for punishment, if we get a reasonable residual we're going to try to rebuild this one from scratch with an ebay rebuild kit for $200. And I'm gonna be sure to show up at the next race with full gauges which I am convinced will help us spot and diagnose issues much sooner than our "how's it running?" and "the oil pressure light is doing WHAT?!??" diagnosis tools from this weekend.

Gauges are cheap and easy to install and provide good info and insurance. We bought mechanical Sunpro water temp and oil pressure gauges from Advance for ~18 each. I also installed a low oil pressure sender and LED warning light just in case.

After all the warnings about our bastard-child B20A engine we had zero problems. That engine is known to run hot and supposedly you MUST use an oil cooler. Again having gauges we were able to tell exactly how the engine was doing. The highest oil temp I saw was 230 and the highest water temp was 195. This was with a LOT of 2nd gear action BTW.

In summary we couldn't have been happier with how well our car performed. Losing the alternator belt due to stripped threads where the tensioning bolt attaches was the only thing that kept us from a top 10. Note to self...bring a spare alternator belt next time!

Mike and Dustin did more than he is saying! They offered advice, turned wrenches, and loaned parts. We were stuck and they got us "unstuck"!

We had a great time. Glad everybody enjoyed the food. It was fun to hang with everybody for a few cold ones and a good meal. I can't wait for the next one.

Team Drinking and Driving: 86th place

The car was fun and fast until we overheated the main bearings out of it and detonated the rod bearings out of it almost 7 hours in. We replaced the bearings in the dirt lot, but couldn't find any until Sunday evening, so we sat out on Sunday. I drove it there and drove it home (was using it as my DD until the brakes fell apart yesterday), so not a horrible weekend. The racing part was monstrous fun; we'll be back next year. Actually it looks like my real race car motor is getting delayed, so the Duff Beer car may be back at CMP next month for time trials. The DIY cool-shirt setup was amazing. My brother's home-brewed beer was excellent.

Indeed. I enjoyed one Friday afternoon as I strolled the pits looking at all the other piles of shi....oops, I mean race cars. See you in October Roger.

More pics of the work I have done on RiZo this week.

A co-worker gave me a cold therapy cooler/pump setup that his wife had to use after shoulder surgery last year and I planned to use that for our driver cooling system. However when I pulled it out yesterday to mount it I saw just how tiny it was. It was definitely too small for what we needed so I had to ditch that and build a system from scratch.

I had an existing cooler so I decided to use that. Next I bought a 12V bilge pump from Wal-Mart and some pipe fittings from Lowes. With a little welding (because flanges had to be added to the pipe nipples) and RTV I’ve put this together:

Image

VK, I did something very similar and had some questions.

I used the CPC dry break fittings like a real cool shirt, I ordered these (got the part numbers from somewhere on the Internet) from McMaster-Carr:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#5923k61/=3r99hp
http://www.mcmaster.com/#5923k31/=3r9a7e

These worked fine with my homemade cool shirt, but one of the drivers showed up with a store-bought FAST cool shirt and it had slightly different fittings. They were CPC fittings and looked like the ones that I was using, but slightly different so they would not mate up properly. Where did you get your coupler fittings and what did you use?

Also, how long did a cooler full of ice last? Mine would make it a couple of hours with the cooler filled about 3/4 with ice and a few inches of water in the bottom. After that it rapidly got useless and needed more ice. I did use a really ancient and crappy cooler, I basically looked around and picked the cooler that I would least mind getting holes cut in it. I'm thinking that next time I'm going to use a really big/nice cooler that I can load up for the day, something like one of those 100-150 quart marine coolers. After being out there with the cool shirt working, I can't imagine doing without it. I mean, maybe if I lost a bunch of weight and got in good shape, but it seems a lot easier to just buy a big-ass cooler.
