I went down today to watch some of the race. When I left at 3:30pm Magnum PU was is 5th place and second in class. K9 was in for a driver change and they could not get the car running again. Looked like a fuel problem. Before that happened they were down 19 laps because their transponder was not being picked up and they had to come in and install it in a different location.

While I was watching, Stephen was in front of the first place car and pulling away. At the time I believe the first place car was about three laps ahead.

When I left Ryan was driving and passing a lot of cars. No one was passing him.

This one didn't end up quite so gloriously for the Dorifto Dogs as the last event unfortunately, "Dieter" plagued them with mechanical problems, but they manage to get him running again well enough to finished the last few laps of the race. After getting as high as 2nd overall on Saturday team Magnum PU had some issues of their own and started today around 50th overall today, they ran pretty solidly today though and climbed back up to 23rd. The Grim Reaper team and Bret Luter's team I think were both in the top 10 after Saturday but had some mechanical troubles today moving them down into I think 24th and 22nd overall. It was rumored that the in Integrenators were jinxed by their name, despite valiant efforts from the team, they just couldn't keep it running. Their backup engine did however finish the race in a competitor's car to whom they lent Saturday night.

Sometimes you are the windshield and sometimes you are the bug. We got splatted this year. In other words we DBU'd - Done blowed up.
Transponder not being picked up properly. 20 laps
Crank position sensor wire came loose. 50 laps
Heater hose failure, blown head gasket and warped head. 250 laps.

The car was fast again, fast enough for a top 20 finish if we had no problems. I brought a spare engine and we swapped the heads. It became our obsession to get the car back on track to take the checkered flag and we did it.

We would not have been able to do it without our crew chief, Sean O'Connel Master mechanic and a ton of help from others.

Thanks to Bret, Dustin and Mike Whitney for their expertise when we were stuck and numerous others who didn't even know us. A guy Steve knew brought us a head gasket Sunday morning.

It was still fun.

Sean is one hard working dude if I've ever seen one. That is very rare IME for people his age. I hope he can get some seat time in Dieter in the future for all his efforts.

Grim Reaper update: We started off with a 1 lap penalty for being lazy in the spring race and not replacing the engine. We worked our way up to 9th place on Saturday. We stayed there until about 2:00 on Sunday when we received the black flag for a team member doing goofy stuff in the pits with his cooler cart. This dropped us to about 23 place so we decided to address a small electrical issue. In the last hour of the race, somebody decided to chop us off in the corner and took the front bumper off the car. A quick stop in the penaly box to remove the front bumper and we were back out. We finished about 25th, one place behind Magnum P.U.

We enjoyed hanging with the other Tarheel teams over the weekend. Look forward to the next time when maybe the gremlins will take a liking to some other teams...

Ain't that the truth. Thanks again Team Grim Reaper! I think I heard Vincent say he might have to buy a Mustang at one point during the weekend.

on thursday morning head #1 was on the car.
on friday morning head #2 was on the car
on sunday morning head #3 was on the car.

at this point i'm pretty sure that we could replace a head on this car and have it running in under an hour. of course, that wouldn't do much good on our block with a broken connecting rod.

mike whitney was his usual amazing self, both under the hood and on the track. and a big thanks to dustin for pitching with both mechanical and logistal support. now we have all winter to work on our secret weapon for next year's race :)

X3! Mark and his team sure know how to roll! Thanks again for including us in the group. BBQ Chicken, Rib-eye steaks, 1/2 lb burgers, and even homemade apple cobbler were all on the menu this weekend. We surely had our fill of food and good times with all the guys.

Just wanted to repost this in case anyone missed it........

Seriously though, it was a fun weekend, our $500 car has about $5000 in body damage, but it will live to run again. We ran OK for the most part all weekend, but had a couple of issues losing water- one time we were totally out!! But, the car never stopped running, even when one of our drivers got rearended, and pushed into another car, t-boning him (which evidently cut the wires to their fuel pump), and in the process our hood came completely off, pulled the hood pins out of the rad support of the car and left it somewhere on track! I didn't see the incident, but got a call from one of our team members that our car was missing it's hood- and it never came into the pits until it was time for a driver change. At this point, the driver said he *thought* the hood might be missing and he *thought* there must be some damage to the car but he decided to keep driving and watch the temp gauge to make sure it didn't overheat.

I was running the last stint in the car, and it was still pretty fast, I could NOT quite catch the Magnum PU car, but I could hang with most of the other fast cars- including the 2 leaders (the RX7 and the Jetta). We ended up with a red flag about 5-10 minutes from the scheduled end of the race, and my temp started running high, so I turned the car off. Then once they cleared the danger they had a full course yellow so we began S-L-O-W-L-Y circulating around the track, but my temp gauge stayed up close to the red. I was hoping for a green flag soon so we could finish up and take the checkered before the car blew up- but then I saw the Bimmerforums E30 sitting dead on the track! I knew my car could not take much more, and I knew it was gonna take some time to roll another wrecker and get this guy off the track- so I went up behind him and pushed him around the track and off to the pits.

Great plan, I thought- but my car started steaming an losing water- so they black flagged me, I went into the pits and got some water in the car, and was ready to go back out, just as the checkered flag flew!!!

Oh well........
