Our house is 37 years old and we've lived here about 1.5 years. When we bought the house, we had a termite inspection and none was found. Later while installing a new garage door we noticed the there was some old inactive termite damage in the header above the door and some surrounding wood. The previous inspector never found it. We also have drilled holes all along the cement block walls near the floor. I'm guessing these were past treatments.

Everything was fine until this weekend when we did some garage cleaning. We had some extra wood trim pieces and an extra solid oak threshold piece that that were on the floor. The oak piece had obvious channels in it while the other pieces were untouched. It looks like they came up through a joint/crack between the garage floor and the wall.

Does any one have any good experiences with termite control companies? Right now my plan is to call a few companies with free estimates and have them come out and assess the situation and compare their conclusions/services.

Thanks!

We used Kilmor (out of Durham) and have been happy enough. We did have termites when we called. The termites died when they were done. I suspect there are cheaper places (our treatment was just over $1000). We have also been paying for their insurance policy since then ($100/year).

Of course, the annual inspections keep turning up nothing.

The Neuse Termite & Pest Control, Inc. 919-553-9888

they have treated the last three houses we have owned. prices seemed fair as memory serves me. no nonsense or add on-ons etc. just what was needed.

We had Neuse come out and give us a quote and they were the cheapest to do the entire treatment out of four companies we had come out to the house. They wanted $1200 to do the perimeter and drill a 1000 square ft basement. In the end we managed to track down the previous owners termite contractor (Aardvark). They are going to allow us to pick up the previous owner's yearly contract and will do a spot treatment for the current problem. They also have a history of our house dating back to the early 90s. While a whole new treatment would be good for piece of mind, it's not really in our budget right now.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Did you do any digging around the foundation in the last year or two? Some sort of new utility hookup, etc?

That is what caused our problem. We ran some wiring to my workshop and disturbed the treatment where the wire came into the house. The termites actually started their path up the backside of the conduit as it came out of the ground.

The next time we disturbed the foundation soil we had the house retreated at the point of the digging.

^ Good point. The problem area is between the garage slab and the house foundation, so we have not disturbed that area. We did have a few companies tell us they would retreat any areas we did landscaping around the house etc.
