I did this when I was up there and did a day long tour of Nova Scotia, a bit pricey but fun, managed to catch a glimpse of a whale a few seals. The cat itself is quite the impressive machine.

Yeah, when we were up there in October, the CAT had just stopped the crossings for the winter. BUT... the Lobstermen were boycotting the wholesalers. All along the Maine coast road you'd find pick-up trucks loaded with lobsters iced down. $3.99 per pound!!!

The restaurants were also selling cheap. Needless to say, we had boiled lobster, broiled lobster, fried lobster, lobster stew, lobster rolls, lobster bisque, stuffed lobster, baked lobster... Had enough for a while, Forest .

Taking the kids? How long a trip? I was born in Buffalo and lived 35 miles from NF. Made several trips thru NE and all the E providences of Canada to the top of Nova Scotia (Grandly scenic around Cape Btretton (sp?) Nat park. Twisties better than Deal's Gap. Prince Edward Is. is also very scenic.
But a more realistic trip would be to take the western scenic route thru Amish area of PA and SW NY up to Buffalo/NF. Cross into Canada at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo and take the scenic and low traffic causeway along the river to NF on the Canadian side. Do see the falls at night with the colored lights on it as well as during the day. Expect to get wet depending on which way the wind is blowing the mist, so take ponchos. A ride on the Maid of the Mist in the river below the falls right up to the face is something you'll never forget! The underground Cave of the Winds walkway opens up like a cave directly behind the falls! The area around the falls is very touristy with places like Ripley's, Madam Tusaud's wax museum and a large casino (good place to go and eat and kill some time sitting down at the huge inexpensive buffet even if you don't want to gamble) A couple miles further up river is a great live butterfly farm. If you want to know more about what to see and do and stay 1 nite or more in that area email me. When you have had enough of the falls cross back over to the American side over the Rainbow Bridge, and head down along the US side of the river (interstate tho) across Grand Island (largest fresh water island in the world) to the outskirts of Buffalo where you will pick up I-90 eastbound. You can follow I90 to Boston (totally avoiding NYC!) or if you have the time get off at Utica and drive up to Lake Placid/Whiteface MT. where they have held 2 winter olympics. Drive or better take the ski lift to the top of the mountain where you can see 3 states. From there journey thru the Adirondac Mountains, across the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White mountains of NH and on to Boston. WARNING!!! DO NOT DRIVE INTO BOSTON! The drivers and the convoluted highways are the worst in the US! Stay at a hotel well outside of Boston that is near a Metro Station Such as Waltham, Needham or Stoneham. Leave your car parked at the hotel and take the Metro train into downtown Boston's harbor area, the historical area. The Boston Aquarium is worth a visit and within walking distance (as is most everything woth seeing in Boston) of Faneuil Hall, a huge revolutionary war warehouse building that has been transformed into a boutique shopping arcade along with food stalls and resturants. Save up your appetites for beef and eat at Durgan Park on the second floor for an unforgettable dining "experience" (I won't spoil the surprise and fun) (and the biggest juiciest steaks on the E coast finish off with Indian pudding topped with a scoup of ice cream) They don't take reservations and are very popular with the tourists and the locals alike so there is always a line to get in. To avoid the line, do like the locals do and use the secret enterance! Go into their bar on the street level and tell the bar tender you are there for dinner. He will send you up the back stairs right to the front of the line!
After ou have had enough of Boston, take the train back to the hotel and pick up your car. Drive south about an hour to Mystic Seaport CT. Tour the restored 18th century whaling village and living museum , see tall masted ships being built and restored as they were in the day and tour such historic ships as the stately Charles W Morgan and the Emma C Berry and over 500 others. Plan on spending at least a full day exploring and learning here.
From MS, head to the coastal highway and take a leisurely 1/2 - whole day's drive right along the seacoast thru Glouster (stop and take pictures with the Old Man and the Sea memorial statue "they that go down to the sea in ships...") Ipswitch where you must stop for a steamed bucket of the famous Ipswitch clams. Then thru Kennybunk and on to Portland and finally to the Interstate to Bar Harbor (watch for a moose sighting along the interstate!) Go to one of the larger lobstering operations for a fresh lobster dinner. You haven't tasted lobster until you have some that were swimming in the ocean the day before! Last time we were there lobster dinners were 10.00 for not one but two whole 1 1/4# lobsters and fixins! If you have never eaten a whole lobster before ask for a lesson so you don't waste any of the good stuff in the legs and body!!! Everytime I've been up there it was too foggy to enjoy Acadia Nat Forest, but it's suppose to be beautiful. I also like Boothbay harbor if you want a place a little less traveled. I would definitely avoid going thru NJ, NYC. going or coming back. If you want any other routes sights tips etc feel free to email or PM.

I agree on skipping the coastal routes. From Kittery on up to Rockport. You can get lobster inland too.

Besides Baxter. If you stay inland there is also Rangeley Lakes area. Probably my favorite. Mount Blue State Park also. I never got that big of a kick about driving up Mt. Washington. You can get just as scenic a view in Maine going up any of the "big hills".

+1, what Jake said. Please spend lots of money up there. Property taxes are too high. My relatives would appreciate it.
