My wife's morning commute didn't turn out too well after the driver of a Chevy pickup decided to pay attention to four guys stuffed in a Civic on the way to work who inadvertantly decided to careen of the highway heading westbound adjacent to the RBC Center on 40.

She took everything pretty well and isn't injured so that's the most important thing, especially since we are expecting our first child in early November.

Anyhow, we're both really bummed but thankful that no one's seriously injured.

In the meantime here's the carnage :(

The car is at Kenny Hawkins now and I'm just waiting to hear the verdict on what we're going to do. My primary concern is whether on not it's a total loss. It's an '03 5MT with a LSD and 45k miles, in great shape until about 8:30 this morning...

There's a significant crease in the rear passenger quarter panel above the wheelwheel, so there may be some serious unibody damage, but I'm certainly no expert. They'll be letting me know the severity this afternoon when they get a few things torn away.

Anyone else been stuck in this dilemma before? In college my '95 Eclipse was totalled just like this, but I was happy to get a check for book value at the time. This time, I don't feel too excited about that idea.

That's all too familiar. Your car is likely worth more, so may not be a total loss, but my '98 M3 had an eerily similar look after I was rear-ended last Oct. The repair bill was estimated something in the $8k range, which totalled the car. I had trunk, bumper, rear fascia, trunk/frame supports, right rear qtr, etc... damage as well. Mine didn't look quite as bad, though:

Now, I was able to buy mine back, and did enough repair myself to make it "good enough for track", but probably not as good of an option for your wife's car.

Glad to hear everybody was ok, and congrats on the baby!

Did your wife go to a doctor for an exam and maybe x-rays, etc.? That is one heck of a hit!!! We got hit with much less damage (barely more than cosmetic) and my wife had a sore neck the next day. I was fine. I took her to urgent care immediately after the accident (we got bumped by a neighbor's pickup less than a block from home so cops, etc. were not needed). His insurance paid for vehicle damage and reimbursed generously ( :D ) for the copay, some "just in case pain pills" and aggravation after we waited about 6 months to be sure there was no problem.

FYI Capital Ford did a great job redoing the rear bumper and support(used bumper cover repainted laser red to match the 11 year old paint on the 97 Mustang).

Thanks a lot for the kind words everyone! Therese's fine today and isn't sore at all, fortunately. I'm going to see that she visits her physician early this week at UNC just in case. You never know... I'm just glad the airbags didn't deploy, but the emt's were saying it often takes a stronger, more direct hit to the corner of the bumper.

Anyhow, the car is borderline based on my discussions with Chris (Kenny's son) over at the shop. It's going to kind of depend on how things go when the adjuster comes out to do an evaluation.

If they can fix everything (and maybe pop out the door dings) back to how it was, I'll be fine with that. We'll see. The damage is almost identical to your car Dustin, except the tail lights were shattered. The biggest similarity is the crease in the panel above the driver's side wheel. The wheels and rear suspension components SEEM to be unscathed, but they're nifty digital frame alignment wadgetry will be the judge of that I guess.

In the meantime, it's just a car, so the baby planning stuff takes precedence, but I'm going to try to make it to most of the events this season.
