I hate to state an opinion on this as I have clients on both sides of the issues and as a good salesman I agree with anybody giving me a check. BUT, I think we have become a community, you might even say a family, and as such alot of us want to discuss matters of importance with other folks who are part of our community.

I am a political opposite of Steve but I always enjoy hearing his ravings, I mean, opinions.(For God's sake he couldn't even admit Palin was hot!!!) So much in fact that we room together at the track quite often.

I think all of us have enough in common that the differences we have can be overlooked and hopefully remain friends. As the great philosopher Rodney King cried " Can't we just all get along"

Well, I'll do the same thing I did at the club meeting tonight.

I apologize for the things that I said about political threads.

I thought we had a rule against it, so it really was an honest mistake, but it turns out that we don't have this rule, so I was wrong.

I was also wrong in thinking that "most people" don't want to talk about, or listen to, politics "in public." Which, I have to say, surprised me a lot. I'd say the split was about 50/50.

The final thing is my excuse - and it isn't a good one, but it's the one that I've got, so I'll use it. I'm in the process of quitting smoking. Wes told me, when I sort of "announced" my decision on a different site, that I was gonna turn into a bit of a jerk. I didn't even see it coming, but yeah, he was right, and it sort of took me by surprise.

I think anyone who knows me well will confirm that internet rants are, typically, not a very "Karl thing to do." So maybe the quitting smoking thing was a part of it. But regardless, I'm not proud of it, so there you have it.

I apologize for making my fellow club member's day a little less happy. It was wrong of me.

It's been a pretty bad day on a lot of different levels for me actually, and I actually caved on the way back from the meeting, and bought a pack of smokes. I think I'm gonna go have one now. :(

I've now come to know that quitting smoking makes a person about 50% less intelligent while the process is going on. My reading comprehension is currently inoperative. It's like I'm on some sort of medication or something.

Karl,

If you haven't done so already, be sure to watch your recording of the game.

Do you mind if I ask my favorite question? Why did you ever start smoking? :?

I've never smoked a day in my life and both my parents did...like a freight train. I had plenty of friends that did when growing up, but I never saw the attraction and still don't.

Probably, it’s just the opposite. It’s called “detox”. I hear things do get better. Just keep eating that candy you had last night and you’ll forget about the smokes. Of course you’ll be 6 seconds slower as the half ton man.

PS – about the political thread. I find reading different opinions quite interesting. I also learned some things by reading what those who search out and provide links have to add. While I was taught never to discuss either politics or religion publicly, as you were, keep it polite, clean, and funny and it’s a good read for me.

I agree with some of you that this is as good a place to discuss politics as any. While I will disagree with some viewpoints I'm encouraged that folks are at least getting involved and paying attention to what is happening politically. For too long folks just didn't seem to care......but had no problem complaining! Seems you earn the right to complain only if you participate.

As for President Obama (and its ALWAYS President. The respect is for the office and for the man or woman in office) I am surprised that after campaigning on a "hope and change" platform he now seems to be more doom and gloom.

Can it really be true that the only way for us to get out of the economic condition we are in is for the government to lead the way? How about we, the citizens of the country lead the way and the government get out of the way and make it easy?

How about we eliminate the accounting gimmick of "mark to market"? How about we repeal Sarbane Oxley and save small and large businesses alike the wasted money spent to comply with it?

Don't know about you but the concept of the government taking money from one group to give to another smacks of Socialism and not a Democracy. Not exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind. Since when does the government get to decide who can "afford" to pay more? You want to pay more? Feel free to send in the check! The IRS will gladly take it.

Where does it stop? The government might next decide you can afford to give one of your cars to someone without one. We should rejoice that folks can make a lot of money. We should rejoice that companies like Exxon make huge profits. They make BIG profits, they pay BIG taxes.

On the flip side, we should prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law, those that have ripped folks off. We don't seem to do a very good job at that. The laws exist, lets enforce them.

That is the problem. The people that cause the problems, the Ken Lays, Bernie Madoffs, All the bankers of the world get off, delay trials, lawyer up, and are not really held accountable (Unless they die) and the little guys who invested in the company cause they believed lose everything including their job.

SOX and its ilk are like most problem solutions a wild swing to the other side to counteract the wild swing to the other side which counteracted a wild swing to ......... We have had a period since the late 70's that has seen more and more deregulation until we got to a point when the foxes were watching the henhouse and then we were all surprised when we went out one day and there were no hens, just a fox knawing on a drumstick. So now we will swing the other way and regulate the living s*%t out of them. No fox - but 30% less chickens too.

It is too bad that most of the politicians only care about the constituents who have paid them (universally - R or D) and are more concerned with power than effective governing.

sigh

There was a paper written by a Russian scholar that states, the United States is going to split into seven territories. The very same thing that happen to Russia is repeating itself now in the United States.

All it will take is for one strong leader to stand up and tell people to quit paying taxes to the federal government. That the state or states are better able to handle their own issues. And the powerful central government is not looking out for them.

What if 5-6 states say enough is enough. We are keeping the money for our people. The central government has nothing they can do. They can not turn the military on the people. Plus the military is a shell. You wonder why the Russians are moving ships to South America...we have nothing to stop them. Ever see a news clip of an Abram M1 moving? No, because they can't because the lack of parts.

If you look, this is starting to come true. The midwestern states are pissed because of all the money being thrown towards the new england states, while they are being forgotten. In the battle of the bailouts, the southern states thumbed their noses at the midwestern states. And then there is California that is already in deep trouble.

All it will take is a catalyst. I have an inkling of who that is already from hearing a little of his rants. Newt.

It is going to be a scary time....think I will just go racing while I still can.

The answer is actually the sort of answer that might just make you say "Oh...yeah, I can actually kind of see that." But I'm not going to get into it. Mostly, it's something I've dabbled in off and on for years, and this is the first time it took hold of me.

But seriously VK - just don't bother with "Why did you start?" It just doesn't matter, and it's not especially helpful to someone who is trying to kick the habit.

I gagged my way through my first beer and can say that I have successfully cleared that hurdle and enjoy the mind numbing benefits on occasion. Ciggarette's are the same...you clear the choking and dizziness hurdle to get to the nicotine buzz.

<--- smoked from 12 to 20 and quit cold turkey.

Hey, I was just curious...I ask everyone, not just you. Hell, my niece is a respitory therapist and she smokes. Of course she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer either.
