I recently switched PCs. I had all of my iTunes data on an external HD. I had to reinstall iTunes on the new computer, but now I have to import everything. All of my music, and playlists are gone. I know the files are somewhere on my HD, I am just not sure which ones to moive where. Can anyone help? I did try Apple's site first, but their instructions were not really making sense to me.

No help for you brother. Thought I could find the info rather quickly and easily and was sorely disappointed. Hopefully I won't need to go through that anytime soon. :)

You're fuxored. I'm in the same boat (my iTunes database got corrupted, data on an external drive). Apparently iTunes doesn't like being opened, ever, without the external drive being attached.

It's just lesson number 837456923 why the Mac >>>>>> PC.

Sorry Jeb, I feel your pain. I just couldn't resist. That political thread wouldn't turn bad, so I figured I'd introduce Mac vs. PC to the forum. Maybe this can get some good old fashioned name calling going!

While we're on this subject, how do you burn a CD from songs that are on an ipod? I can't even copy them from the ipod to the hard drive. Is this not supposed to be possible? Are you only "allowed" to put songs on the ipod, but not transfer them elsewhere? If so, apple sucks.

I can easily transfer songs to and from my Ipod, and burn them to a CD.
I'm using Amarok on Linux.

Reasons 1 through 837456922 were price comparisons :P

I prefer water cooled computers. Here's one my favorites, the IBM 9021-720. Slightly more expensive than a Mac, and not supported by iTunes, but a sweet machine nevertheless.

No, it has to do with Apple appeasing the record industry to help control music piracy. Had they not done this, there would likely be no iPod. Thank the record industry, not Apple.

This may change at some point, I don't know. They've now been able to make most of the music catalog available DRM free, which is a HUGE step in the right direction.

If you have a mac there is software called "iPod Rip" that allows you to copy from your ipod to your computer. I don't know if there is a Windows version

It's been a while since I did it, but under your My Documents folder there is a folder labeled My Music, and in that a folder iTunes. I just copied the entire iTunes folder with all sub folders/files into the same spot on the different PC. Everything came along fine, and it worked with no issue that I recall.

If you have a backup of the old PC on that external drive, go to the root directory, then Documents and Settings, and then to the user account within that dir (the one you signed onto Windows with). Click that name and then select My Documents folder under it and follow above directions.

It should work, and I don't recall it being much of an issue.

I think the trick is, if you have access to the first computer is to export the Library's XML file (I'm on a Mac, but it lives under File>Library>Export here).

If you can do that, I think if you replace the empty Library (whereever that lives on a PC) with the XML file you created with the correct drive attached to the new machine you should be okay.

Sorry, I'm on the other side of the Kool-Aid fence.

That xml file is located in the "My Documents/My Music/iTunes" folder, so if you copy over that whole folder as shown above, everything should work fine. (this is assuming you have a backup of the whole directory from your previous PC of course).

So Windows automatically stores the XML file in the same folder as the actual MP3s/AACs/<insert your flavor of media file here>?
