So Windows automatically stores the XML file in the same folder as the actual MP3s/AACs/<insert your flavor of media file here>?

Well, it has the xml file in the iTunes directory, and then there is a subdirectory of the iTunes directory called "iTunes Music". In that directory are subdirectories, by artist name. In those are directories by album name. Finally in those are the actual songs.

No I didn't. Here is what I did:

On the old computer iTunes was installed to an external HD. I still use that HD with the new machine. When I reinstalled iTunes on the new machine, I still had it go to the external, so everything should be right there. I took the main hard drive from the old computer and made it a slave drive for the new computer. In my case are there a couple of places that iTunes places files?

I did switch the xml file and all I got was cover art and song names, but the songs themselves are no longer linked to the place they are stored. If I import them, it doubles things up right? Playlists are gone, but those are easily recreated in my case since I pretty much just add whole albums and not individual song mixes. Some clarity on where to look for the appropriate files and where to place them would be helpful. Chuck can you shed some more light on it?

I don't think itunes will let you transfer music between two computers that you are synced with. Did you not have all your music still saved on your iphone?

I wish I had an 85GB iPhone! The only thing that changed was the primary computer. The external HD is the same.

The only other thing I can think of at the moment is that the external harddrive assigned letter is different between the two computers perhaps?

This (losing the association with an external drive) is a known issue in the Apple forums. The one fix that I found, to force it to use an earlier database, failed.

I just live with not being able to play songs on my computer with the HDD attached.

So this is weird.... I had resigned myself to imprting all of my music again and fired up iTunes this morning to get started. I got some errors that it wasn't installed properly. So I reinstalled it only to realize that the external drive was a different letter now than in the previous system. So, I went into the manage devices screen and reassigned it the letter that it was on the old system. I reinstalled iTunes and voila, everything is there, cover art, playlists and the music. So, life is good again.
