I've used it in Florida and recently here since the ants are now here. I tried another brand with poor results. I switched back to Amdro and they are gone.

Good Luck!

My wife found it at Lowe's but not in the main ant killer area. She had found in another outdoor item area. Ask. They should carry it.

While passing through Texas drop by Houston. They sell it by the ton, and that was just for my son's yard.

I've used Andro and it worked pretty well. Be sure to follow the directions.

I got torn a new one the last time I suggested this here, but it definitely works:
Pour about a cup of gasoline directly on the mound, concentrating on the center. DO NOT light it! The fumes being heavier than air will penetrate down to the deepest chambers, killing all inside. Within a week, no more ant activity.

diesel fuel works even better. not very green in the grand scheme, but hell i live out in the country.

Why does living in the country make it more acceptable to pollute? If anything it's worse, since the chances are higher that you and/or your neighbors are on well water. *shrug*

I live in the country, and we don't do this. In fact, I'm incredibly diligent about making sure my equipment doesn't leak fluids and any contractors who work on my property are expected to do the same. I'm not going to preach any more other than to say we've only got one planet so please act accordingly.

And no, I have no idea if the commercial solutions for getting rid of fire ants are any less toxic than a cup of gasoline or diesel. That's for the person getting rid of the fire ants to decide.

Really, you should try the shovel full of ants method at least once. Chemical free, personally satisfying, and worth the time invested.

Donnie, I respect your concern for the environment (and your restraint in your post). I too have a concern for the environment (I even worked for a company that did environmental impact studies of major projects like oil and gas pipelines, power plants and sewage treatment plants) but I don't live in the country, no one within miles is on well water, and past history makes me believe that a cup of gasoline, a basic hydrocarbon which originated in the earth, being returned to the earth (the additives in gas today, primarily detergents, are low and far less toxic that the lead compounds added previously) is much safer for the enviroment than the synthetic poisons sold in hardware stores that are not native to any natural environment and may never safely break down. I have never heard of gasoline causing any serious long term ecological disaster like the thinning of wild bird egg shells, decimation of honey bees and other beneficial insects, or red tides. There are always trade offs, and IMHO the health threat posed to myself, my wife and my dog by fire ant bites is much more immediate and real than the potential harm derived from pouring a couple of cups of gasoline into the ground a year.
YMMV.

and another nerve has been ridden up on. :) let me know when i get on your last one Mr. Barnes.

i use Amdro in the areas that are well away from the livestock. i resorted to the diesel fuel in the expansion joints of my driveway as nothing else seemed to rid the area of ants. they were starting to take over the front of my garage. i feared for the safety of my beer fridge.

as for the pasture areas, i just run over them with the mower.

but seriously now, i know i sound like a country dumbass some times, but i too am very conscious of my pollution impact on my land and the areas around me.

remember, stereotypical references and cheap shots are the fundamental basis of bad jokes.

and with that said, what gives Donnie? i didn't think Republicans gave a damn about the environment. :poke:

Nobody is on any nerves, no matter how hard you try, Steve. 8)

I recently had to bag a real estate deal because petroleum products were found in the well water, so I'm a bit sensitive to the issue. But like I said, I also understand that OTS pesticides may not be better. I haven't researched what is sold to get rid of fire ants, but I do know that the EPA has cracked down heavily on those products in recent years so I'd bet it's safer that gasoline or diesel. FWIW, the well water we tested with petroleum was 8 parts per million. Seems low, but the state standard for acceptable? Zero. The owner said our test was flawed as we "probably" didn't run enough water through the system first and it had sat with little use, blah blah blah. He did all that (probably ran a few thousand gallons out, knowing him) and then got "about half" what we got in our test. I said thanks, but no thanks, as while this was commercial property it was in an unzoned area with residential neighbors and I wasn't going to get stuck with unhappy neighbors now wanting ME to clean up the aquifer. I can't imagine how painful that is.

Yes, I believe they had dumped oil and fuel on the ground behind the building in this case and likely more than a cup or two, but still. I'm also jaded from a previous deal where I bought an old farm house and some land. The previous owner had been in the hardware store business at one time, and when they closed they just stuffed what was left of the inventory in the basement. I actually had a Phase 1 environmental inspection done, but the inspector didn't do his complete job and decided to skip the basement. He took pictures into the basement from the door and said it was an "outbuilding" which wasn't covered by his inspection but should be looked at. His scope of work clearly stated he should do that entire structure and he didn't, which won me some money back in the lawsuit later.

Why was there a lawsuit? 40 year old cans of Ortho *something* (which is supposed to be a BIG clue to these guys something is wrong and they were clearly visible IN HIS PICTURES from the doorway, let alone where he could have easily got to). What's worse is further in we found cans of AGENT ORANGE. It cost close to $30k to have that stuff professionally cleaned up and properly disposed of. If you think asbestos cleanup is bad, that's nothing compared to THIS stuff. *sigh*

So while I might be a republican for the most part, I'm fairly jaded on these environmental issues.
