I have had quite a few mounds spring up in my back yard this summer and nothing I have tried seems to be doing any good. I found this website that has some interesting ideas. http://www.fireant.net/Control/index.php Anyone have any luck killing fire ants?

I used a regular ant killer from Lowes to kill a colony in my front yard this summer. I can't remember the name of what it was. Its not like spread on the ground and "bang" they are dead. I treated it twice over a period of 2-3 weeks and then about a week after the last treatment I noticed that there was no activity at the colony anymore.

I tried a couple of the sprinkle on the ground versions and they seem to just relocate. During the summer they were making new mounds every week. I think they may have a giant nest under one of my trees.

That's been my experience as well. The stuff just makes them move. Usually in my case closer to the house and sometimes I started getting ants in my house.

My favorite trick that works more often than it doesn't is to take two nearby mounds and take a shovel full of each and dump it on the other. Ants are territorial and doing this causes them to fight to the finish. I hate these buggers so I get a certain satisfaction with this remedy.

It's also free as long as you are careful and don't get bit in the process. Then you have to buy benadryl cream

You know you are breeding a super-badass red ant colony? Just wait until 2208 when scientists trace the origin of the global RedAntApocalypse to a single yard in NC

Ladies and gentlemen, uh, we've just lost the picture, but what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has apparently been taken over- 'conquered' if you will- by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive Earthman or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

According to a Fire Ant specialist we spoke to at length, there is no effective way to kill all of them in a colony. The fire ant "killer" that you sprinkle on and around their mounds is effective but it really just coaxes them to move on.

These things are very hearty and very adaptable.

Most of the commercially available bait will work, just read the instructions carefully and completely. Do NOT pour the bait on top of the mound, they will not eat it. Pour the bait around the mound, and follow the instructions for the best time of day to apply it (IIRC it's early morning and late afternoon). Most baits become useless if they get wet.

The main thing is you have to keep on top of the problem, or it will become a bigger problem. As soon as you see one mound, make note of it and treat it ASAP.

Yeah, it kinda sucks, but the best you can do is convince them to move to your neighbors' property.....

Amdro is the most effective killer I have used that you sprinkle around the mound; not on the mound. Do not disturb the mound or they will relocate.

I've used it in Florida and recently here since the ants are now here. I tried another brand with poor results. I switched back to Amdro and they are gone.

Good Luck!

They did not come from Florida, they migrated north from Laurinburg

Or you can use the fire method.
