I don't see the problem with the occasional religious or political thread. If they get nasty, lock them. As a moderator, you don't even have to read them. If someone complains, check the last page and lock at your discretion. I think this is a pretty good bunch of folks here, and while occasionally things might go downhill to some degree, I don't think we have had too much in this realm. Sure, if someone derails what was otherwise a non-political or non-religious thread, smack them a bit and split it or delete their stuff. But if it's clearly one of those types of threads, people can choose whether or not to read it. That's the beauty of the way a forum works over email lists.

I also should have said "nice positive post Pete".

This tends to be a civil and thoughtfull group...mostly.

I think we tend to self police very well. As a group we have to maintain that and if a thread if any type gets out of hand, report it and have it locked or deleted.

I think things are a bit too raw for some people to have a real discussion now about if we should have political/religious discussion or not, but I will reply to Jim's and Donnie's comments.

Jim, I totally understand what you are saying. To paraphrase the quote "You can't define pornography, but you know it when you see it", I think that if you say "no politics/religion" that it can be governed, but you have to rely upon admins and moderators to have the right balance.

Donnie, I also think that some discussion is good, but as it stands right now there are no limits. In Steve's recent thread I talked about when things can be locked and not shortly afterward the topic of "censorship" came up. Which means to me that people are missing the point. If I lock a political thread, I am not trying to stop someone from making a political comment, I am usually trying to stop a fight that is out of control. So all of a sudden I am a bad guy for stopping a political discussion because it had crept over and violated other forum rules.

Now, "out of control" is also kind of hard to describe. Some people enjoy a good political discussion. But I have read hundreds of political threads on online forums and the vast majority of them are not what most people would call "civil discussions". It is just an online version of shouting heads on TV in which "discussion" is not really taking place. For some people this is just fine. For other people it's a real turn off. I don't think it's fair for the admins/moderators to have to figure out "how far is too far for the majority of the forum members" because we will constantly get it wrong. We are going to be either locking too early or too late. Either way we are pissing someone off.

Overall, my opinion is that this site is about THSCC which really is about motorsports. That is what I think the focus should be on. We have the lounge which allow for off topic discussion, but in my personal opinion that should not be a home for religious or political discussions as well. There are other places for that type of talk.

I'm good with that. As long as we can also lock any thread that involves someone trying to get me to hold any THSCC office. ;)

Well stated, Richard. I couldn't agree more.

It's never too late. Sometimes we change them while counting them. People make all kinds of mistakes :)

Back to the original post: What does "123" mean?

I'm with Art. What does 123 mean and why did you change your original post Pete? That was a fantastic post and I really liked reading it.

To be perfectly honest, I could have cared less which candidate won, they were both horrible in my opinion (not starting anything, just keep reading). I was and am still very skeptical on Obama being in office. I hope that he is able to make all the change, or at least most of the change, that he was talking before Tuesday night.

That being said, it's still a roller coaster ride, and I'm on for the long haul. :D

i deleted it, because i dont want my freinds to be.. .angry with me.. 123 means 123. it is not offensive and is somewhat confusing. that is the intent.
i screwed up, and i dont want my freinds to be angry with me. i will not be at the rallycross.. we need to work on our truck. the power steering hose is leaking. big heavy power stroke diesel and no power steering means broken arms. if you want, i can try to re post it. i deleted it to prevent a fight. in effect, i locked down the thread for you, removing you all from the work of doing so.. allowing the thread to remain open.
