I was lucky enough to meet him once. He used to race IMSA with Jim Fitzgerald. Paul Newman cam to Jim's funeral. I knew Jim because my dad and he worked together at Western Electric and dad introduced Jim to Datsuns in 1967.

This is a sad day for the racing world, the film world, philanthropy and the rest of the world. He was one of the good people in the world.

It is indeed a sad day. We lost a great person and a great racer.

I had the good fortune to meet him once many years ago. He had Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell driving for him at the time. He flew into RDU to pick up a friend of his so that they could go to Manteo to go fishing. His friend was late, usual for him according to Newman, so we got to chatting about his race team and driving in general. My favorite exchange from that talk was this...

PLN: "I have the two greatest drivers in the world driving for me and we can't win a damn race to save our lives. What do you think we should do?"

Me: "Hire me to drive!"

PLN: "Chuckle. Not sure even that would help kid."

My Mom and Mother-in-law are still mad at me for not getting a photo or autograph. Honestly, I think the reason he sat and talked to a 21 year old punk at an airport is *because* I didn't ask for an autograph. I just wanted to talk about racing.

Race on Paul.

Met him about 8 years back down in Homestead at a CART race. Very nice guy to talk to and was always a positive role model. Have heard many stories of how he used to go sit and watch races in the grandstands up at Lime Rock between his on track heats. My dad spoke to him on more than one occaision while sitting watching races before my time. He will be missed by everyone.

Race on.

Here is a link to an interview segment of David Letterman with Paul from Jan 2007. Donnie Barnes has a part of this interview on his Blog.
