Can you report your provider, service (dsl lite... 1.5 mbps, 3mbps, 5mbps...etc), cost, actual download and upload speeds?

http://speedtest.net/

I'm thinking of pulling the plug on Time Warner and going to DSL for the lower cost. Road Runner (Road Runner High Speed Online Service
7 Mbps download speed/384 Kbps upload speed) will be about $50 monthly without digital cable bundled. I'm getting these speeds at TWC's sped test:
5614 kbps download/358 kbps upload

From speedtest.net:
6768 kbps download/357 kbps upload

I see AT&T has a 6mbps for $43. I asked about taxes and fees and the rep said there were none. I thinking that can't be right given that every phone, power, cable...etc bill has them.

I think I have about $4 in add on fees for DSL and that $43 price is with the $5 bundle discount I think.

I would be dropping AT&T if I did not hate TWC. I recently had a company call me to "save me" on my long distance. They could not save me anything but somehow my long distance plan got changed anyway after I told them no thanks. I called AT&T to complain and they refunded the fee for switching the plan but not the fee to switch back. I also added a cell phone and had to call twice to get my bundle discount for having home, DSL and cell service. It turns out I had to have a long distance plan on the home phone to get the bundle discount. This sucks because I dropped the plan on the home phone because I get free long distance on the cell. AARRRGGH

I wonder how long before Progress Energy starts offering line carrier service?

If you hate TWC this really doesn't solve your problem. My broadband is done this way and I still have to pretty much deal with TWC is I have problems (which is MUCH more frequently than it was when I had Verizion DSL).

We have AT&T now Bellsouth got bought out. That is who I started the service with. Paying $52 month for what they call DSL Extreme. I just ran Speedtest against the Greensboro site. 3056 down and 370 up.

I guess TWC has faster speeds if your area is not saturated with users. I'm still not convinced to swap over to TWC. On the DSL I have almost 0 problems over years of service.

6808/359 Earthlink (via TWC) in Durham/RTP. However, I think about once or twice a month I have serious connectivity issues. Usually this is not a complete outage, but some type of issue in which I have very high latency (3-4 second ping times).

21305 down/477 upload.

Road Runner 7 Mbps/Unbundled (the $50 plan)
7 Mbps download speed/384 Kbps upload speed.

Granted this is during the day. But it's when I use it the most.

Important Updates to your AT&T Internet
Terms of Service

Dear AT&T Internet Service Member:

Effective Oct. 18, we are updating our AT&T Internet Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.

We have revised our agreement based on a few key principles. First, we support our customers’ right to free expression. Second, we will give our customers clear information about the capabilities of our service and any meaningful limitations on the service. Finally, we will provide our high speed Internet service in discrete, non-overlapping speed tiers.

In line with these principles, we’ve added some new sections and rewritten others to more clearly describe our Internet service. A few of these important changes are highlighted below.

For AT&T High Speed Internet Members:

* AT&T High Speed Internet Service Description. We have added new language to the service description to more clearly describe how we provide your high speed Internet connection, and to explain what factors can affect the performance of your high speed Internet service.
* Termination of Voice Service. With AT&T High Speed Internet Direct service, we can deliver the benefits of broadband without a home phone connection. For customers who terminate their home phone service with AT&T - but not their high speed Internet service - we have added new language that will ultimately enable us to maintain a customer’s broadband connection at the then current rates, terms, and conditions for AT&T High Speed Internet Direct service.

I think they call this "naked DSL". Basically DSL minus regular phone. I personally think that phone companies are missing the boat by not moving in this direction as an offering.

People like me who have moved onto VOIP or are using Cell phones and don't want to be forced to have a traditional landline. So my options are to go wtih cable, DSL with extra cost of a landline or maybe one of the wireless solutons. My local telco is Verizon in the RTP area and if they offered naked DSL, I would probably jump on it. But as far as I know they still don't offer it.

I am thinking about dropping my land line since I added cell service. It will probably happen now that I can keep my DSL. I have been very happy with the up time in the last 5 years. I have only had 2 outages that lasted for more than an hour. The were from a bad phone line from the pole to my house and the second was when someone repatched my line at the cabinet down the street.
