Donnie,

How reliable is the 300 lbs lighter number, especially after adding the supercharger, bigger wheels, tires, and brakes? I don't see anything in the specs I found that decreases weight (the stock hood is aluminum and weighs 27.7 lbs). Plus the six has smaller weaker transmission and rear diff.

According to the MVMS for the 2005's the curb weight difference between the Ford versions of stripped six (3352) and a premium eight (3506) is 154 lbs. At least some of that is brakes, wheels, trans, and axle. Anything left over is probably trim level.

Well, that is a good question. Can't say for sure. Shelby said the engine package was 200 pounds lighter, but maybe that's not quite true. I would imagine the hood is a little lighter but not much. The front and rear fascia may get a bit. The exhaust is probably a little lighter. The seats are definitely doing to be lighter. They remove those small side windows for aluminum panels, so that's lighter.

So it *should* be 200, I'd think, anyway. So that's a bit short of the 300 bantered about on the forums. At any rate, the GTs I drove at the school at Miller were really good. The only qualm I had was it only took me about half a session to boil the brakes, but they said they were only using DOT4.1 fluid and those cars had stock brakes and no extra ducting. Otherwise I thought the power was pretty good and the car drove exceptionally well for such a big beast.

Now, the other unknown is the torque numbers on the supercharged V6. It's probably not near as good as the GT V8. Would love to see dyno sheets on both, and would definitely love some confirmation on the weight. Damn car looks really good, though. Especially the black/yellow combo.

Donnie,

FYI the six has the much weaker T5 transmission and 7.5 inch rear dif. I'm pretty sure the six doesn't have limited slip. John Ames used to break the 7.5 behind the early Fox 5.0's as I recall.

To use the car hard you really would need to add weight back with better driveline parts.

They update the diff with the performance package and they say the T5 has been handling the power just fine. *shrug*

Link to the MVMS specs for the 2005 Mustang. Some interesting details including the weights of various options.

But the V8 will always sound better. (At least the V6 is now a 60 degree version instead of the old flatulent 90 degree version)

Dick - thanks for that document with Mustang specs. I didn't have that one. Looks like the options I ordered on mine (Interior Upgrade Pkg, Shaker 500, and side air bags) only added 12.5 lbs over the base GT. Deleting the wing saved 6.4 lbs.

The world class T5 is much stronger than the original.
From what I'm hearing from my friends at the General, There may never be a V8 Camaro, or a 2010 Solstice/Sky, G8 GXP, etc for that matter. They are being heavily squeezed by the economy and legislation calling for significantly higher CAFE numbers. larger luxury SUVs will be harder to find than full sized vans are now.
Don't shoot the messenger, I didn't vote for this administration...

Chuck,

Correct that the newer ones are stronger. The impression I have is that most issues are from speed/power shifting (i.e. drag racing) or from highly modified engines.

http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/products/T-5.asp

FYI

The best T5 is now 300 lb-ft rated. It weighs 75 lbs

The V-8's 3650 is rated at least 360 lb-ft. It weighs 120 lbs

My 2001's T45 is rated 325 (they switched to the 3650 right after my car was built . . . but mine is lighter at 109 lbs :) )

Now isn't that more info than anyone other than a Ford or GM V-8 person would ever be interested in . . .
