Please sign this petition:

Note that this is not just about being able to drive on the beach. The places they are closing are to ALL traffic, foot, boat, and vehicle. Most of it is to save nesting places for a bird that is not native to the OBX and is thriving in plenty of other places, just not the OBX. *sigh*

Signed.

Save the beaches !

I've talked to several folks who have been down there trying to fish and it's almost as if it's this settlement was aimed directly at fishermen. Many of the good fishing sites are in the "No Beach Access" areas.

Hopefully the petition works.

I only know things from Nags Head south to Ocracoke, but that's EXACTLY what happened. The entire Oregon Inlet area that's good to fish is closed (all the stuff you can see from the Bonner bridge). There's a small area open there at the Oregon Inlet, but it's basically just beach, nothing near the inlet.

The lighthouse area has a small stretch of beach open, but nothing near the point, which is where all the good fishing is. The end of Hatteras Island has a good many sections open, but none right on the point, which is, again, the good fishing spot. The north edge of Ocracoke is the same way, though you can still get out to the inlet to fish by walking thanks to the parking area at the ferry docks and they didn't close it to foot traffic.

I don't fish. Well, other than a deep sea trip I took on this last visit just because I had never done it (and I caught an 85" Marlin...woot!). But even I thought as I drove down the first day "man, they just killed the fishermen here." *sigh*
