Bottom line if I felt my kids safety was threatened I would take Steve's advice cover your butt with calling animal control and then if that doesn' t work, I wouldn't think twice about killing them, then call the neighbor and tell him to come pick up the carcass off your lawn.

Again, in Wake County that isn't likely a lawful thing to do unless you have a bite mark or other evidence THAT dog was actively attacking you or someone on your property.

But you could take that to mean that you just shoot it and then bury it with nobody watching.

I'm with Cline...I love dogs. I really do. But if people can't control a potentially dangerous animal...

We did, they were apethetic to our concerns. They so much as said that their dogs wouldn't attack unless the kids were messing with them. As we all know, that is not necessarily true.

They also denied that the dogs had ever been outside the fence. Obviously that is not true as we have seen them out 5 or 6 times in the evening.

Sometimes reasoning just doesn't work.

had a feeling that was going to be the answer. it is too bad that the dogs have to take the hit for stupid owners. Have you tried shooting the owners with the gun first.

I have had good results with pepper spray. You can get a really big long range bottle from most gun stores, one shot and.......... The owners can no longer deny that the dog was on the loose, and the cleanup makes them very sensitive to your concerns.
Peace,
Don

In my Raleigh neighborhood I had a problem with my next door neighbor's pit bull mix. It kept getting out and would charge any people it saw. I gave it a spinning kick as it charged me in my own yard. I called the police non emergency number and animal control promptly responded 2 hours later. On another of the dog's outtings animal control had it cornered in my back yard for an hour and then just left because it was quitting time. It was funny watching two large guys chasing a 40 lb dog with lassos to no avail. When they left they just said they cannot catch him.

I would go with the pepper spray first and paint ball as plan B.

And a digital camera to take pics of the dogs off leash and out of the yard.

Ryan, those pyramidair guns are nice but a little spendy for my purpose.

They are VERY nice though.

Check out the Crossman 2240 - its about 50 bucks and is very upgradeable, I used to shoot 25m indoor bullseye with one and actually did really well.

Mine was slightly modified with an airbrake, some internal parts and a cheap red dot scope.

This was also a lot of fun, but certainly more that you'd want to use against a neighbors dog

I realize a lot of the suggestions here are meant in jest, but just in case, shooting an animal with a pellet gun or blow gun or bow and arrow etc is an act of cruelty to animals and could end up with you cited instead of the neighbor. Animal control would be my first choice since it would also generate a complaint history. If I personally needed to confront the animal to chase it off I would choose the pepper spray or a high pressure nozzle on my garden hose. The nozzles are inexpensive at your local DIY store, they look like miniature brass old fashioned fire hose nozzle, and concentrate the water into a very strong stream that hurts at close range. Pick up an inline lever style shut off valve as well so you can leave the hose pressurized in a strategic location. Should be < 10.00 for both, and the nozzle works well for cleaning your deck afterwards.
Anyone who knows me knows I just love dogs and most other animals domestic or wild, but if it came down to protecting my family (and my dog is part of the family) or property, I would choose the baseball bat or rifle!

At the risk of getting lambasted for "attacking" Chuck again, I still have to point out that I'd rather get hit by a paintball or a pellet than I would pepper spray. No question about it. So I'm not sure how you could consider one "animal cruelty" and not the other.

I understand the sentiment, but we're not talking about chihuahuas here. Each case is different, but it sounds like Todd is talking about dogs that probably double his youngest in weight. Heck, they might be approaching Todd in weight! Plus, fur will deaden a pellet or paintball blow pretty well. But not pepper spray!

Now, I'm not saying pepper spray isn't a good alternative...it might be one of the best suggested, in fact. Sucks that it's a lot less fun than the other alternatives, though.

hit them with the paintball gun/pellet in the wrong place though, and you've crippled the dog. I'd imagine that at close enough range, you might be able to break a bone, and you could for sure blind it if your aim is off.

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody.

I think right now we are going to get some pepper spray and maybe the paint ball gun (that is more because it would be fun to shoot the fence in my back yard while tending to the grill along with fending off these dogs.) We, along with our neighbors, have called animal control and they are aware of the issue and will come and take care of it when the situation arises.

Pepper spray and paintball the dog and its owner.

If you can find a refillable pepper spray, add some Tinks #69 doe-in-rut smell to it.

Just for the record, the only thing I've ever shot was a squirrel and I felt terrible about it. Never went out "hunting" again after that, stayed with shooting paper instead
