i despise cones, but i am learning to enjoy my 04 Z06 in moderation on the track. given my propensity to hit shit (no pun intended) i only bring it to the track occasionaly. i am very impressed with the Michelin Pilot Sports as a drive to, drive on and drive home tire.

come on over to the dark side Bryan. even Cline will be driving a Corvette one of these days. now if i could just convince him domestic beer is better, i would be golden. 8)

Sorry my Apex/Holly Springs friend won't happen. Yuenling, which is my every day beer, is a domestic. Jusst finished a very rich Polish lager (strong finish with a choclatey after taste, might have something to do with 8.3% alcohol content) I am on my way to the interweb to check prices on used Porsches as we speak.

Drove an 08 STi this morning. Pretty cool, but not all that impressed...just not the kind of car I'm looking for right now.

Also drove an 07 Shelby GT. That was pretty fun. Obviously an excellent choice for autox, but seemed like a better daily driver than I was expecting.

I'd hold off on that Bryan. That white one that was at DC is already on its second engine. And the dark silver one was staged in front of me, laying down a pretty epic cloud of blue smoke.

I would stay away from the 08 STI as well. The local one I drove a couple months ago is on engine #2 now as well. It only had 1200 miles on it when the first one went. Subaru seems to have screwed something up majorly with the engine or tuning.

You get the Shelby GT and I'll let you borrow my STi as a daily driver (if you stay out of it and short shift you can get north of 25MPG) and do all the setup work to it. You provide parts. Hell, I'll even take care of the getting of the parts and all that if you reimburse me. Labor to install is on me. Then I provide the tires for Nats and you let me codrive. And I'd like a codrive before then if at all possible some dang where to test it out.

And I just mean we car swap for the time that's necessary to do the labor to the car, not for a long time or anything. Though I may drive it a little while we've got it. :-)

I *might* be able to haul it back and forth to Nationals, but there's a good chance you'd have to do that. I'd pay for half the gas on that, though.

Bryan,

You've probably ruled out a Solstice GXP ZOK, but since you mentioned it earlier and I just drove a Sky (without a ZOK package, no sway bar, and very used Hoosiers) this weekend I thought I'd pass on a few quite comments.

The car was *very* easy to drive, other than being a bit loose under power due to not enough rear toe, but that is quickly correctable. The car turns very fast times without doing anything fancy, it seems like you are going to get groceries. The Sky was good enough to win or at least get pretty close, I just ran out of talent on Sunday morning. While the car is big and wide, it did not drive that way and I started to adjust pretty quickly to the car. It was very easy to handle at the limit when it picked up a push or got loose. I imagine a Solstice ZOK would be clearly better and even easier to drive than the Sky due to the better springs, etc. It's funny, I'm not a big fan of how the Solstice looks, but really liked Steve's Sky (especially in the dark blue) this weekend and the interior was pretty nice as well.

While it's a great car, with an awesome suspension, and I had a blast driving it, I like something a bit more edgy or more feel...probably due to so many years in little CS cars. While the Solstice is a faster car the Shelby does have more "feel" to it. So, if that's important the Shelby is a good choice. The upside to the Shelby is that it's competitive at both Tours and Pros...and has lots more cargo/passenger space. The Solstice is likely the car to have for Tours, but not Pros.

Good luck on whatever you buy.

Eric

I've meant to chime in hear earlier, and I hate to come across as a fanboi, but you would be a fool not to seriously consider the C5Z. Its not an easy car to drive, but endlessly entertaining. I was never once bored in it. It does everything very well, but it is hard to manage all that power on an autocross course. However the challenge of that is much of the appeal and when you do get a chance to press the loud pedal to the floor on course its simply unreal. Of course maybe I'm just a power junkie? The only realistic reason that I could see you not going with a Z06 is that it will probably be harder to finish in the trophies at the national level events than most of your other options, especially at first. But you would be very hard pressed to have as much fun trying. :)

At this point, I think Bryan needs to think long and hard about what will be competitive in '09 and '10. With the start of a major restructuring being proposed yesterday for the stock classes, that included the Type R going to B Stock for '09, I think things will be turned upside down. The proposal also included the Exige and Elise supercharged versions going to SS, which could be the death of the C5 Z06 (and C6 Z06). - AB

Aaron,
Give me a link to the proposed changes you're talking about. I've been reading the SCCA web page and don't see anything. TIA

For all those that want to read it, it gets very interesting around the top of page 17 (starts on the bottom of page 16)

And now for something completely different!

I know you want a cool street car but if you want something long term autocrosser why not buy a cheaper street car and spend about 20K on a C-mod car??

If not that then I say pick a Porsche. They are all cool so it don't matter which one.

Well, my plan (ok, maybe it's my wife's plan more than mine) is not to buy until after nationals, but when I read your post to Lara, she did say "huh" in an almost positive way. :)
