Differing opinion....I drove the same Elise mentioned by others - was not impressed at all. A bitch to get into and out of. Did not like the seating position at all. Felt like I had to drive scrunched down in the seat with my head pitched forward. Sure, it had power, but I was pretty 'meh' about the car overall.

That's probably what I'll try to drive next...I imagine I'll know pretty quickly whether it stays on the list or not.

Drove a GXP today...pretty cool...I think it stays in the running.

Great power once the turbo kicks in...didn't really get to test the handling that well, but what I was able to do felt pretty good.

Really didn't like the seats though. Very soft and the seat seemed to be giving a bit under heavy loads...obviously not good for autox. Other negative is trunk space...getting golf clubs in there looks dicey at best, which would make it not much better than the Elise in the practicality dept.

Also learned that I can only use $1k of my $2.8k in GM Mastercard $$$ :(

But overall, it's a nice, affordable package...just wish it stirred something in me a bit more.

Here is my $0.02. I have driven just about all the cars you mentioned minus a Viper.
A Z06 is just plain silly, everytime I drive one I get out with a huge grin, which is worth a lot IMO. The Elise is a great little car but I am not sure you would want to daily drive one. I really enjoyed the 15 mile test loop I got to take in one with Spencer from Lotus of Durham last fall. For the same money a Z06 would get my vote though.

In AS the 2008 STI seems like a good choice. I have driven one on race tires at an event and it seemed to do what I wanted much easier than the 2005 I had experience driving. The owner then got it aligned and put a bigger front bar on it and it improved a huge amount, I can only imagine what putting good shocks on it would do. The S2k is a scalpel to the STI's sledgehammer approach. The GXP seems to fit somewhere in between which might be just right for AS. I love the S2k so it would get my vote unless you were only doing Pros and then my choice goes to the STI.

For BS the Nismo should be the car to have but no one has tried one yet so it would be interesting. I am of the same opinion that the body kit is not exactly attractive. The Ferrari would be wicked cool but as was already stated maintenance would be miserable.

The Shelby is another great car but then you have to run in the same class as Strano. (Not sure if that is something that would be important or not) That guy can drive and would be a very large challenge in and of itself.

Of all the cars, if I had the money I would be buying a C5 Z06 and run it until it isn't competitive in SS anymore than go to ASP but I absolutely love that car.

I'd be shocked if a 2008 STi can outrun a 2005 in autox trim.

I can't imagine anyone daily driving an Elise.

You'd have to play a LOT of golf before that should factor into the decision if you have an Excursion waiting in the wings.

The Vette seems like the all around best bang for the buck out of everything you've listed. That said, that damned Mustang is cool, and would have to be a hoot to autox. Obviously also very practical to daily drive. It's also a great recipe car...call Sam and not only do you get everything you need in one place, he'll tell you how to set it up. He'll probably kick your ass in it, but I like that challenge. Well, I'll enjoy watching you get your ass kicked even more. 8)

I hate convertibles as daily drivers. Too much wind noise.

Viper? Too much car noise.

993? I dunno, you'll complain every time you have to visit a parts department, I know that. I still think the AWD cars are going to be slower on any autox surface due to the extra weight and not so great power delivery system. You could take one to any PCA autocross and DOM1N8!!1! Well, unless the Kozlaks show up. See Strano, Sam.

I think it was Donnie, several months ago, who alluded to the notion of an A-Stock NSX. I drove a factory stock 98 NSX a couple months ago. What a fabulous car.

Ehh... the dude has summers off from teaching and has a membership to a golf club that includes greens fees... this is why the golf club thing actually hits home. :)

Personally, I like the 911 just for the uniqueness. Much like the Crossfire, you rarely ever see one that has someone who can drive and/or is setup. As for the Kozlaks, they are more beatable than Sam, but there are two of them to deal with :) - AB

You just compared a 911 to a Crossfire. Do not show your face near me for at least a year.

As a golfer and car guy you just sometimes have to sacrifice a car. Heck I had to take out my back seat when I put a roll bar in because I could no longer drop the seat back. If you are a real golfer you golf clubs are with you anytime your underwear is on. You don't know when the opportunity my arise so you have to ready. I looked a the Elise and walked away with it off my list.

What about a Caymen, it looks to me that clubs won't really make it. I have been thinking about one but have got to determine that.

Yeah, maintenance is definitely a concern on a 993.

Consensus on renntech seems to be that the awd cars push more than the rwd cars too.

I'm fairly used to getting dominated...not sure it matters if it's Strano, Kozlak, Feinberg :x , etc...
