Space frames are nothing new. Most of the cool race cars of the 50s and early 60s used them, until monocoques took over.

I think the the Maserati Tipo 61 "Birdcage" is a work of art.

I suppose they skinned it in aluminum because fabric would have flapped furiously at speed, unless they doped it (which these days would cause a whole other kind of flap :) )
