I have a 1989 Peugeot 405 mi16, and after much deliberation I have put together a small team from NCSU and we are going to enter Targa Newfoundland. We would like to fabricated everything ourselves and we have all the tools we just need some advice and know how if anyone is interested in helping out.

That's freaking cool as hell. I always watch the Targa event on Speed when they show it, looks like an absolute blast. That's on my bucket list to go over, and if not participate, to at least watch it. I don't know crap about welding, buy you have all of my moral support. Have fun with that!

What class are you considering building to? I'll make sure I watch out for you.

We are not exactly sure on the class yet we are definitely going to do the actually Targa rather than GT but we will have to see what we can do money permitting. Right now we are concentrating on suspension and reliability.

Sounds more suited to 24hoursofLeMons..... ;)

Seriously, you should go to some races (VIR, etc) and check out some cage designs- take pics and observe some of the details. Is someone on your team a good welder?? Do you have access to a PROPER tubing bender (NOT a pipe bender) and a good welder?? Do you have the patience to fit everything together before you get pissed off and just do a half-assed job??? If yes to these, then you shouldn't have too much trouble.

A tubing notcher comes in really handy, but is not required- it does make fitting the joints MUCH easier than the saw/grind to fit method.

Sounds like alot of work, and alot of fun!!!

That is awesome! On the "someday" dream list, Targa Newfoundland is one right at the top of the maybe-I-could-do-that section :D

Best of luck to you!

while i suspect you gentleman are quite capable of constructing a cage, are you all equally confident in your collective abilities to construct a cage that will keep you from killing yourselves in the case of an unfortunate incident while racing in the Targa competition?

grassroots efforts are nice but some times it is best to defer self-preservation to the proffessionals.

Competition Cages. i would strongly suggest ya'll contact Chris.

do keep us abreast of the journey, i too would love to experience that particular competition.

I would have to agree on having someone who has experience building cages. I am a DIY guy and am trying to do everything on my 914. I can weld and feel that I could build a cage if given enough time. But when I am far enough along to have a cage put in, I am going to call Chris.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
