I concur with Jason on getting a 2WD with brushless though I like the buggy better. I picked one of these up awhile back and it is a hoot. Right out of the box with a 4600 6 cell battery it was doing wheelies and 35+ mph on pavement and the battery lasts nearly 30 minutes. On grass it has enough torque that is still moves very fast as well. I got a 7 cell battery for it, and I think it easily gets over 20 mph in grass with that. I haven't broken anything on it yet.

Yeah, I picked up a Radio Shack "Road Phantom" 4wd 1:10 buggy from a craigslist seller for $30. Needed a battery so I got the upgraded one from RS. It's fun, quick, and so far pretty durable.

I'm also playing phone tag with another CL find for a Kyosho monster truck 1:20 2wd for $40.

Mike,

Lemme know when you are ready to unload one of these car/trucks, or if you find another deal you just can't bring yourself to buy- I'm looking for a new father-son "toy" we can run around on the farm.....

Back from the dead!!

Picked up a big box of Gas RC trucks + parts today at a local yard sale.

Got an Exceed Infinity that appears to be complete, but no radio. Also got an HPI Savage 25 that appears *mostly* complete, but it's been partially disassembled and the engine is in pieces in a ziploc bag- we did get an HPI radio. Got a box with 4-5 different bodies AND random new and used pieces and parts in it too.

I've done a little research, but both appear to be fairly common, so parts shouldn't be an issue. I think the Exceed is a 1:10 and the HPI is a 1:8, but could be wrong.

Planning to spend some time today cleaning them up and evaluating what we've gotten into. I'm hoping we can get one of them running enough to just drive around and have some fun with it. If it turns into too much of a PITA, I'll just put the stuff up FS on CL and unload it.

Any advice/guidance would be appreciated.

i have a pair of outdated rc trucks. hobby grade.. raced.. plenty of parts.. repairable..quick. battery life only a while. but they are race type trucks. 2wd electric. needs work.. because sitting for a long time.. but can be made to work again. if you want off road style trucks.. these would be what you want. fliud filled shocks, strong electronic motor, good off road tires.. if you want them for your son, they would be great. tool box for the parts.. like i said i used to race them.. they need love, but tehy can be great to a good home.. i have martial arts, racing.. and my mountain bike to entertain me, and my dog.

team losi race trucks both. rechargable battery packs.adjustable springs.. everything.i loved them. but have not used them for a long time.. so if your son wants them. they would be great.

I did some research last year and ended up getting a Traxxas Slash 2wd VXL. (VXL is brushless, you want this!) I had the old rc-10's from back in the day but nothing can beat the durability of the Slash. Just do a youtube search for Slash bashing and you will be amazed and the abuse these things take.

All the kids have a blast playing with it. It has a training mode which limits the power to 50% which is manageable for a 4 & 7 year old on a 2S (8.4V) Lipo. We take it to the beach (which is crazy fun on the sand) and camping.

On the battery... Go Lipo. In full mode, speed and power are crazy! The major benefit for me is the discharge characteristics of the Lipo battery. You will get the same power for then entire run right until it goes into low voltage protection mode. With the nimh battery, it is awesome for 3-5min then constantly slows down until the end of the battery which is usually ~10-12min for me. On Lipo, I typically get a solid 25min and is is fast the entire time.

It is $$. I think $400 for the entire setup but I have had no troubles in the 1.5years I had it.

If you go Lipo, just do some research on the dangers of those packs. Seriously. You NEED to know how to handle a pack that gets physically damaged, as they can set a car or a house on fire (and have done so). I'm not saying don't do it...far from it. But if a pack gets physically damaged (as in you can see it's bent or worse, has a hole in it), you MUST take serious precautions with it. If the damage is bad enough that the chemical reaction starts internally, in about 30 minutes you'll have a seriously large smoldering hot mess that can ignite just about anything.
