So my router decided to take a dump. I have internet access, obviously, but no phone service. And after a 3.5 hour conversation with Vonage's finest tech advisors in India (I asked where they were), they determine that my router had given up the ghost.

The one I have is a Linksys router with 2 phone ports. Obviously I have Vonage, as told by my thread title.

I would like to have a wireless router obviously.

So my question is this...

What router would you suggest to replace the paper weight that I have now?

Todd,

Will Vonage send you a free replacement? If not, you (or anyone else if you don't want it) can have (i.e. for free) the Vonage router discussed below if you pick it up from my work location near Tryon Road and Hwy 64 in south Cary. PM me if interested.

When I had Vonage as part of a consulting job I put the supplied Vonage Linksys router in series (upstream as I recall) with my vintage 2002 Belkin wireless router. The router is Linksys Model No. RT31P2-VD. "Broadband with 2 phone ports." It has 3 output ethernet ports.

Todd, I dumped Vonage about a year or so ago, but still have my router if you want it. - AB

Thanks Aaron, I got one from Dick Rasmussen this morning.

Who did you end up by going with since dumping Vonage. After my nightmarish Customer No Service (TM) experience with their wonderful people in India last week, I am looking for options.

I bailed on home service all together. Back in '97 I was cellular only for about 2 years and I went back to that. My blackberry gives me the ability to use broadband connect, so I dropped my high speed option too, for I'm in Verizon's EVDO connection area, so the speed is good. - AB

What browser are you using on your BB? The stock one isn't great, Opera is better but still mediocre.

I'm still just using the stock one. I have heard about Opera, but have yet to switch over to it. Have you got it running? - AB

Yeah, it's fairly decent, but scrolls really slow and I haven't seen any shortcuts to speed that up. On text based sites, it is really bothersome.

Now that I RTFMed, Opera 4 is the shizzle.

I had problems with compatability between my vonage modem and wireless router when I hooked it up according to the diagram included with the Vonage modem (daisy chained between the RR modem and the router) after searching thru the help files on the CD there was a mention of hooking up the Vonage modem off one of the ethernet ports on the router instead of in front of it. I hooked it up that way and no problems since. I went with Vonage as they were the only service or Telco that would transfer my store business # to my home.

I saw their original directions for configuration, and decided to hook up as you describe instead - worked fine out of the box (though I think I did DMZ the vonage port, just in case it wanted to do anything not otherwise allowed in my router firewall rule set.
