dealer paint protector package

My boss just bought a new Accord and the dealer wants to sell him the "paint protector" package for about $500. My first instinct was to tell him it was crap, but I wanted to ask first. Any validity to this?

From the dealer's standpoint, it's a great deal. Seriously, these are all marketing jokes that somehow dealers are still able to convince people to buy. I would rather have a nice coat of Zaino on it if it was me.

What is it? If it's that 3M clear mylar or whatever it might be worth it.

Ah, good point. I assumed this was polymer wax "paint protection". I guess it could be clear bra on the front and mirrors which would be potentially a decent deal if you wanted such.

clear bra's are a GREAT idea IMO, my wife has one on the mini, and everyday when I look at the front of my mazda I wish I had gotten one too. Rock chips

Clear bra? Yes. That'd be a pretty good price for a good quality, well installed one.

"Special polymer based paint enhancing and gloss improvement system" or something similar? No.

I wouldn't even let them wash it. They almost inevitably leave the paint in worse condition than it was before.

I agree, unless it is a clear bra (unlikely) it is just an extra profit add on: 10.00 bottle of polish and a quicky application. He'd be money ahead to take it to a good detail shop for the same thing at 25% the price. Same goes for glass "security" etching, special tape pinstripes/graphics, interior stain repellant, extended warantee etc., basically anything that costs extra above the sticker price listing.

I agree with Chuck. If you ever want an extended warranty, buy it after the purchase and call around. All of the dealers offer the exact same packages at wild differentials in price.

After I bought my Celica, I considered buying an extended warranty. For the 7 yr, 70,000 mile bumper to bumper with zero deductable, I got quotes up to $2200 from about 8 different dealers. I found a dealer in SC that would do it for $770... for the exact same warranty good at ALL Toyota dealerships.

In the situation with clear bra, go to a place that installs the 3M stuff or if you're really brave, buy it and install it yourself

I'm a big fan of clear bras. Wait, what are we talking about here?

As far as cars go, I say run away fast from any dealer add-ons.
