Eventually a C6 when they get cheaper. I'll seriously look into replacing the 540i with a CTS-V or a Pontiac G8 when used ones get cheap enough.

Mike,
If you are looking for an L67 Car (ie 3800 S/C), buy one made after 1997. That generation is much better than the previous ones and are a lot more reliable. heck, you can buy my Regal is you want. It's an L67 with goodies.

Taking this completely off topic ... what cars were the L67 installed in? And which could be found for the least $$?

You win the prize. I can't wait to start this project ... will be another year or so, but I'm probably going to start part-shopping this year.

The L67 can be found in 97-2005 Pontiac Gran Prix, 98-2004 Buick Regal GS and LeSabres, 97-2002/3 Bonnivilles, and 99-00 Olds 88's (I may be off a year or two).

The cheapest seem to be the Buicks and Bonnies. The GP's have become tuner cars and a lot of 1/4 guys are snatching these up since the have started to hit the 9's with them. The Olds are rare to find. Many people are really starting to discover this engine and they are showing up in Fieros, Camaros and Z cars. Many are now producing over 400 WHP from bolt ons. And the performance parts are pretty cheap compared to many other engines.

BTW, I am serious about mine..it's for sale. I am going to look at it's replacement this weekend. The Regal has enough power to do 12.9 in the quarter in 00, and I am a lousey drag racer.

I'm going to be looking for a wrecked car and/or somethin completely worthless other than the drivetrain. I suspect your car is well out of my budget for a motor.

Edit - From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V6_engine

L67 Supercharged

The L67 is the supercharged version of the Series II L36 and appeared in 1996, one year after the normally-aspirated version. It uses the Eaton Generation 3 M90 supercharger with a 3.8" pulley, a different throttle body, fuel injectors, cylinder heads, and lower intake manifold than the L36 uses. Both engines share the same engine blocks, but compression is reduced from 9.4:1 in the L36 to 8.5:1 for the L67. Power is up to 240 hp (180 kW) and 280 ft·lbf (380 N·m) of torque. Final drive ratios are reduced in most applications, for better fuel economy and more use of the engine's torque in the low range. The engine is built in Flint, Michigan. The engine was certified LEV in 2001.

This engine is or was used in the following cars:

* 1996-2005 Buick Park Avenue Ultra
* 1997.5-2004 Buick Regal GS
* 1996-1999 Buick Riviera (optional 1996-97, std. 1998-99)
* 2004-2005 Chevrolet Impala SS
* 2004-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
* 1996-2004 Holden Commodore (VS, VT, VX, VY)
* 2001-2004 Holden Monaro
* 1996-1999 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight LSS (limited)
* 1996-2003 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
* 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

I think I just found my donor. Maybe I'll go lowball him...

I may be lower than you think. I am going to sell it pretty cheap. BTW, that Riv is the 96, so it has the Gen 1 3800sc.

Have you been around Jeff Underwood's Lotus Clone?

If you had, you wouldnt be looking at 3.8L S/C motors.

Well crap you're right. I'm just pleased to see that there is like virtually ZERO residual value in a 10 year old unloved mainstream FWD sedan :) I'm sure I'll get under the $1000 mark with a few more searches :)

You sure about that?

What's the quote I heard once? "I will have enough power when I can lay black marks down from the apex of one corner to the braking point of the next"

Buzzy no-torque motorcycle engines need not apply.

I'm with Whitney, I'm sure Jeff's car is spectacular but if I have the choice of a 1.0L engine for an S/C'd 3.8L engine in basically the same car, I'll go with 3.8L any day of the week. I don't think Whitney is looking for "enough" power, he's looking for "way too freakin much" power. :D

Actually, looking at the Craigslist page again, it looks like it would be a L67, or Series II:

* 1996-1999 Buick Riviera (optional 1996-97, std. 1998-99)

I remember talking to Ron Adee at our first THSCC VIR South Course DE/Time Trial in 1999. I think Ron has competed in nearly every One Lap Of America event since then in a massively overpowered Viper or, more recently, Dodge truck. I recall that in 2007 he had some ridiculous tube-frame truck putting down like 800 horsepower.

Anyways, back at the VIR event he was getting in some seat time for the upcoming One Lap visit there in his torque monster Viper. He introduced me to a new concept that I haven't considered before -- the fact that, while on track in the Viper, he was working on perfecting his "Threshold Acceleration". Wow, I have heard of having to master threshold braking, but acceleration?!?? OMFG.

The thought of having too much horsepower _everywhere_ has consumed me ever since :)
