I know I'm going to get flamed again, but you HAVE to be impressed with the engineering on the Ecotec 4, easy 260 HP 260ft# torque from 2.0 L with a 100K warantee. They already have a ECU upgrade available thru GMPP that brings it up to 300 HP without losing the warantee. Since NASCAR racecars have no connection to what is in the showrooms, GM has turned to SCCA for their win today sell tomorrow emphasis.

What car do they put that in?

I assume you are joking?
Besides the GXP and Redline? Soon to be available in the Cobalt SS and HHR SS.
The ECU upgrade is not AX stock legal but is legal (and was used in the runoffs) in T2.

Actually Chuck, I was going to ask the same question. I couldn't remember what the engine name was for the GXP motor (why can't we just go back to the 350, 351Windsor, 351Cleveland or 5.0 names, dammit!!! Those made sense!!) And with my poor interweb search skillz, I couldn't find that engine any where.

Thanks for clearing it up for me!!

The Ecotec is a pretty damn stout engine built with racing applications in mind.

I remember seeing the engine in either 99 or 2000 at the GM assembly plant in Lordstown. They did a whole presentation to a bunch of us J-body weirdos about all the cool stuff in the motor.

I'm pretty sure that my next three or so car purchases are going to be GM products :) First probably a 1990 Buick Lesabre (or whatever cheap car I can find a 3800SC in), then an early-90's Chevy S10 (can anyone guess what the plan is?). Eventually a C6 when they get cheaper. I'll seriously look into replacing the 540i with a CTS-V or a Pontiac G8 when used ones get cheap enough.

I've owned 6 Hondas and 6 BMWs. GM has been really impressing me lately, maybe it's time to obsess over a different brand.

The complexity of modern BMW engines is starting to scare the crap out of me. For example:

What makes the 2.0 version of the Ecotec in the GXP etc so unique and powerful (beside the turbo) is the direct injection FI system being used for the first time in a production engine. The injector nozzles are right in the cylinders where they can spray the perfect amount of fuel in the ideal spray pattern and @ >2K# of pressure it is totally atomized. I have been told that the engine as is with just the nanny guards removed from the ECU is capable of >400HP!
Some of the unlimited motor import drag guys are getting >1500HP out of modified versions of the 2.4 engine.

This sounds almost like honda fanboi-ism of old, were folks were touting vtec motors making >100hp per liter. I'll still take a v8 instead.

Not discrediting the Ecotec engine in the GXP at all, it is indeed an impressive mill, but is not the first production use of Gasoline Direct Injection. Actually if you read above the first fuel injected cars were GDI in the 50s. It is the first production GDI car build by an American manufacturer though.
