Last February we had the motor/clutch system replace on our 5 year old GE washer. It was less expensive than buying a new one at $200 for parts and labor. This past Tuesday the same unit went out. We called GE service and they agreed that the part was still under warranty and the service guy would be out in 2 days. We agree that’s great and are please with the quick response.

On Thursday the repair man shows up and confirms it’s the same part and gives us a quote to replace it. $195 for the labor, the part is free. My wife is livid and calls GE, and is told that warranty work labor is 2X the amount, and they refuse to reduce it. She tells the repair guy to just leave.

So we went out and just bought another brand (and a nicer unit). As they die, there will be no GE major appliances in this house from now on. We have had all of them break and just tired of them.

CN - GE sucks

That does suck. Would they have left the part and let you install it yourself?

probably, but it wouldn't be under warranty since it wasn't installed by an authorized person.

See if they will give it to you if you still have the old one. Then put the whole thing up on Craigslist and see if you can makee a couple of bucks back?

I am not surprised by this. In the Medical field that I'm working in, I heard many story about GE service.
A co-worker had GE give him a certificate toward GE appliance to get out of an Extended warranty because the appliance had broken down twice during normal warranty, and once during the extended. They didn't want to warranty the equipment anymore.

Hell, I'll submit that Bosch diswashers suck (two heater coils in 4 years, no warranty coverage) and that Sears service is abysmal.

I'm pretty sure their refrigerators are also GE now.

Their Lady Kenmore line of washers and dryers used to rock. We raised 3 kids and beat the heck out of our first set and it lasted from babies to teens. The set we have now is starting to act up. It's the one we got when they were teens. So we're still getting at least 10 years out of this set. Neither set was ever broken/repaired.

Their lawn and garden equipment is Poulan unless they changed that too.

I will never buy a GE appliance again either, based on my GE service experiences.

In my last house (new contruction with new appliances), my freezer went out after something just over a year. I did my homework on both the warranty, as well as what the issue was likely caused by (defroster). I decided to call GE to see if that part, if that was what was bad, was covered under the 5 year portion of the warranty. Upon hearing, Yes, I scheduled a service call, figuring I might as well let them do it if it was going to be free. So the guy shows up, debugs the issue as a the defroster as expected, then says I have 2 options - Pay him $75 for the diagnosis and not fixing it, or pay him $200something for him to fix it. He would not accept that I was told differently, claiming that was another part of GE and he had to get paid. I went ahead and have him fix it, paid with credit card, and figured somebody at GE would care enough to listen to me. After a half dozen phone calls, I finally got somebody who I convinced to send me a credit for $150 or so, which was at least something. A month or so later, I get mail from GE - and inside I found a voucher which I could send in to claim a rebate form which could be sent in to claim a rebate of $150 on the future purchase of another GE appliance.

I will never buy another GE appliance.

Their washers, at least the front loaders are Whirlpool. I think their fridges are too. Microwaves are GE, I bought one to replace the busted GE one and found that the mounting brackets and stuff are identical. The only difference is that the turntable has no "Do Not Turn" Feature

I've decided all companies suck for customer no-service. I don't even factor it into the equation. I paid 6K for a new HVAC system when we remodeled and bought what was supposed to be high quality Trane stuff, installed by a company with the "TRane specially trained company" logo. they screwed it up so bad that it has NEVER in 7 years worked right and I have spent more money replacing shit on it than the system cost. When I complained to Trane they said take it up with the dealer. I told them that was my problem the dealer sucked and it still took a bunch of yelling just to get a guy out from Trane. Everyone, even the Carrier/Lennox/independent guys say Trane is the best but the CSvc sucks.

I wouldn't say it all sucks, but more often than not it certainly does. The real shame is that GE service used to ROCK. Up until about ten years ago, anyway. Then they started cutting corners like crazy and it's been terrible from then on. Sears stuff used to rock because DIY types could actually get parts for almost anything with a Sears brand (or their other brands). Not any more.

Getting independent appliance service guys that supposedly specialize on even "high end" type stuff like SubZero is hard. I'm not even talking warranty stuff, just normal repair out of warranty. We have yet to find someone decent.

It's funny...every house in the US has a fridge, stove, etc, and yet you can't get decent service. You want your Caterpillar skid steer serviced? There are umpteen companies (including your local dealer) that will send someone out there QUICKLY who know what they are doing and will not rape you on the cost. Need your icemaker repaired? Prepare to bend over, IF you can even find someone competent enough to do it. Hard to believe, but we're a disposable society now. People don't deal with things that need to be fixed very well. *sigh*

Luck of the draw it seems to some extent. We have all GE appliances, their high end stuff (which probably just means it gets a pretty face and you pay twice as much), and our house will be five years old in March -- no failures as of yet. We also have a large GE side-by-side fridge powered on in the garage that was our main one in two previous houses. It will be 20 years old in April, and it is still working fine, never been touched. It's probably time to put it to rest though as I'm sure it is horribly inefficient by today's standards.

All the more surprising because they are all pretty simple machines. If I ever get sick of bikes maybe I will start a home appliance service business. Looks like the biggest hassle would be getting parts.

Oh my! I bought a GE Christmas tree last year. So far, so good, but how long before the lights start winking out and the plastic needles fall off?

No fear of that. They usually just burst into flames.
