Has she driven it yet?

Yes she has and she is hooked. As a matter of fact, she asked me if we have a Novice School coming up!!! I think we may have another Miata showing up to our events next year!!!

Did the SEB ever get around to classing one of those things? :)

Maybe I'm giving a serious answer to a sarcastic question (and if I am, I'm prepared for Jim's mockery), but could they really class it as anything BUT H-stock? I suppose they could create an I-stock class. . .

I think the Smart car is going to be on the Stock Exclusion list for due to high center of gravity vs. wheelbase... similar to what has happened to the Scion XB. - AB

Hey man, my mocking days are over. Seriously, after being mocked by a minivan full of 14-year old girls, I can't possibly wish that fate on another human being. I've been so cruel and I never realized it...

Todd, that's good to hear. I hope she continues to enjoy it but tell her to stay away from minivans! :D

I've heard of regions letting them run in GS, but currently they aren't really legal for stock at all since they are grey market cars. The 2008 will change that, though, and I'm sure people will be asking. I'm not sure you have to worry about them tipping, but there's some index on that based on Cg height and footprint that will yield all very soon. It may even be on it already, I just don't remember the exact name to go searching for it.

At any rate, the thing wouldn't be fun to autocross. The steering rack is slow and you'd HAVE to do something about the shocks. It's pretty flat and not horrible to drive up to a point, but past that point things get weird fast. It's got strange bump steer, a very slow manual rack, and the bigger rear tires and wider rear stance make for crazy amounts of push. OTOH, just leaning your body forward actually does seem to help forward bite. ;)

Is that a DOT standard type of thing or just specific to the Smart Car?

It would be interesting to see the data on a variety of stock cars & suv's, that's for sure.

It's some sort of standard listing for most all cars...dang if I can remember what it is, though. *sigh*

Jeb, why not just get Eric's C Stock car? Then you'd be done. Get in and drive...

Looking at it from an economics point-of-view, Do the 1.6 Especially if it has an LSD.
I paid $4,100 for my '93 5-6 yrs ago, with a hardtop, but no LSD. Mileage was about 78,000
I think I've got my money's-worth. Total time on-track at 6-7,000 RPM: about 70 hrs. Total mileage to date: 82,000---driven to a few autocrosses and to Roebling once. (That was enough :).) Trailered everywhere since.
The important part: Looks like I could take all the goodies off, reinstall all the stock stuff, throw some wax on it, and still get around $4,000 for it--without the hardtop!
Total depreciation: Virtually nil.

As an autocross sled, the 1.6 can be competitive in the right hands. On-track, it gives up a little on the straights to the 1.8's, but is still quick and predictable.

Probably doesn't really matter which one you get, because they've both reached a near-horizontal line on resale value. Maybe go with the lower mileage.

I figured I would post an MPG addition to this thread. I filled up earlier in the week and drove about half a tank around here with top up and down and to Charlotte in the rain, top up and the A/C. I calculated my mileage and it was 29.7. Not too bad!
